Turbotax free edition

I need to get started on my tax returns. I have always used TurboTax in the past but this year my tax situation is simple enough I can use the free edition. Anyone here use it? Is it easy to import last years return-especially a TurboTax return? Any concerns like having one's info on the net? Even if you use the installed version you still need to transmit your return.

I did with no issues. Our deductions did not add up to more than the standard so it was easy enough. Took 1 week to get the refund from the IRS via direct deposit.

Just did my taxes and went fine. There is no state withholding on my income (now that I don't live in Ca) so I need to get used to sending in estimated payments. Oregon state taxes are more than twice as Ca-I guess due to no sales tax.

2 years later and online Turbotax has lost it's luster. Last year the "free" version cost more than the CD and I just found out I cannot transfer online Turbotax 2019 return into the 2020 desktop version (different format) so I have to manually input the data. If I had started sooner last year I would have abandoned online and used the desktop version.

Did you go to the IRS site? They list several free sites. One thing they mentioned was filing via the net would get one a stimulus check quicker than a mailed in ballot,as they check your income quicker than by hand.

I mailed mine. She never got last years stimulus and, like I said, filing online was supposed to be better, even though I had reservations about that. So, I filed for her, to speed up the stimulus check process, only to find, you need to enter your last years AGI as a verification which I did and it kicked it out for not matching the 2019 filing. After double checking, I entered what was was off last years filing and it kicked it out again for not matching.

She never received any 2020 stimulus, never received any notification from IRS regarding a discrepancy on her return. Tried calling IRS which didn't work out, then saw email was supposedly the way to go, sent one, about six or so weeks later got an answer with a reply showing a link to IRS FAQ's. LOL
So now, at this point, she hasn't received this years stimulus, or any notification of a problem from IRS.

Don't know what's next.

I want to stick with the same format year to year so my previous years info is transfered to the current return. I don't have a issue with stimulus. Online Turbotax has limitations which I exceeded quite quickly then one needs to upgrade+but the state. The upgrades cost more than the installed desktop version of Turbotax.

Download the pdf tax forms, write and calculate yourself by using the books that come with the forms. Print, put in envelop, put a stamp and send via mail. Much cheaper than TurboTax.

I did it that way for many years-I guess I got lazy. Plus I can e file if I wait until the last minute.
