Any recomendation for an open gear or open machinary grease.
 

Hay it just occurred to me that there are different type of grease and I have been using the wrong one all these years.

For years I have been using the same type "general purpose" grease" for "general purpose". You know the Lithium Grease, ball bearing grease, the black stuff, the white stuff on everything. They work fine in seal and cover machinery. But when I use it on things like door latch, bicycle chains and exposed rails (from a sliding door). They gum up with dirt to the point where it gets worst then not greasing it at all and they get messy and have to clean at least once a year.

But I seen machine parts either exposed or semi exposed that have been grease from the factory where the grease hold up relatively well and clean and remains functional after years of not being service or grease. They are usually amber or dark amber in color and almost waxy past texture.

I was just reminded of this when I was working on my ski binding. Where the machinery is semi cover. The grease they use is still there not very dirty for sure functional and these are 10 year old bindings. Now if I used lithium on it it would have gummed up in a season.

So any experience. I am looking for a grease not an oil. And not wd40. wd40 just clean it and lub it and it does get gum up.

we called that white stuff monkey snot. The good stuff now water don't mess with it.

Bicycle chains, and other exposed drive-trains use wax. There are special blended lubricants that go on with a solvent that evaporates shortly after application. Those leave the wax behind as a dry, lubricating, film. That would be my recommendation - whatever you decide, it (in my opinion) needs to be "dry film".

What you're looking for is 'dustless grease', I use WWII surplus Lubriplate ~ they made enough of it to last forever it seems.....

Way back in my farm boy dayze I dimply recall "Corn Grease" being used on the 1920's & 1930's farm implements we had, maybe someone here will know .

M-B has a special dustless grease for the sunroofs, maybe that's what you're looking for .

I still have 6 tubs of that stuff out in the garage...I'm a third generation owner of it. Lasts a long time...my grandkids will wind up inheriting some of it when I die, I'm sure

The corn grease you will buy today is literally sloppy - its a semi fluid grease. which literally will fall off any moving part - its great for filled type applications like tripod CV joints and sloppy corn heads cases.

some valvoline greases are recommended for open gears - I think crimson or cerulean branded.
