I have struggled with coffee use/addiction for years. A lot of people say it’s not a big deal, but it is heavily addictive - was incredibly hard to quit at times, serious headaches and blah feeling for three or four days. A nutritionist I respect said the headaches were not withdrawal symptoms, they were symptom of the original toxicity which the stimulant effects mask. Coffee is said by many to have a weakening effect on bones and joints.

I have a vivid memory, about four years ago of going without coffee, and the copious cream I put in it - one of the main sources of regular old dairy that I get, aside from ice cream and cheese. I did this for about a week, on the fifth day or so I recall I was in Home Depot and needed to walk to the other end of the store, and suddenly noticed I was walking rapidly with no pain, felt really powerful compared to normal. It was exhilarating.

One might think I stayed off of coffee and dairy after that, but no. That would’ve taken more sense and self-discipline than I apparently have.

I’ve been having some serious joint pain issues lately, along with other health challenges. The peripheral neuropathy in my feet is not helping. I think this might be coming from pre-diabetic sugar spikes. I first noticed it while I was eating perhaps the most decadent chocolate chip cookie ever, along with sugared coffee, with major cream, the only way I drink it.

I’ve been reading up on foods that cause inflammation, looking to go for a no inflammation diet to the greatest extent possible. Dairy is never spoken of well in that context. Another big thing is getting a high omega-3 to omega-6 balance.

Most foods are higher in omega six, and most all of us are going to get more six. My understanding is you want to shoot for about a 4 to 1 ratio, rather than the more common 15 to 20 to 1 ratio. The little dried seaweed snacks are good for 3s. Grass fed butter also supposedly. I just bought a large bottle of salmon oil caps at Costco for about half of what is advertised for online. I also eat salmon and sardines halfway regular. A relatively new item on the scene, for me anyway, is krill oil. Said to be better than all the rest for omega-3. It has its detractors - takes food away from whales. My reading has it that krill are so plentiful we could not make a meaningful dent in it.

Long story short, too late for that, I’m going cold turkey on dairy, coffee, and sugar again, it’s been about five days, and I could swear that my joints are feeling better. It’s a bit soon, I should know a lot more in a few weeks.

I am big on the Paleo diet principal, humankind did not eat dairy till about 6000 years ago if I’m not mistaken, and even then it wasn’t widespread. Cows milk is meant for baby cows. It’s pretty obvious. Some of the diets of habit we have are hard to break, and most of us are convinced that they are essential for our health. Myself, I want to walk rapidly and powerfully without pain again. I’m 69 now, might be hoping for a lot, but I can’t get that memory of the night at Home Depot out of my head. Got to find the self-discipline and go for it.

I never heard about a connection of cof-dairy to joints. Let us know how your experiment goes!

Thanks! Now that I’ve gone public, I’m going to have to stick with it.

One can go wrong being a Google scholar, I get that, but there are a lot of hits on dairy and arthritis. Here’s one:

https://switch4good.org/ditching-dairy-can-alleviate-arthritis-pain/

The story with coffee is a little less conclusive. I found a lot of hits regarding coffee and rheumatoid arthritis, not as many with osteo. Here’s one that says mean things about our favorite drink.

God help me, coffee and a brownie/cookie/croissant is one of my favorite rituals of all time. About a week ago I was having my standard regular old Peet’s house coffee and one of their brownies and noticed that I was closing my eyes to savor the pleasure. Not sure how widespread Peet’s is. Word around here is that they precede Starbucks in coffee expertise and their stuff does seem to be a tiny bit better. Plus they have packets of nifty honey right there on the mix counter, and you can mix your own stuff now. Starbucks has honey some of the time, you have to ask them for it, but they mix it up for you now. I use the word “mix“ loosely because they really don’t stir it very well. I tell them three packets of the brown sugar, and if I don’t stir it myself, when I’m at the bottom of the cup I see sugar, not to mention the last ounce or two is way too sweet.

Now I can avoid that aggravation.

Talking COFFEE

I don't often drink milk, I'll just have to make a go of things with my coffee...

I likes me a cup of coffee all right. I tried the bulletproof recipe for a while - no cream, instead grass fed butter and coconut oil melted in, then whipped up in a blender. I sorta liked it, it’s the only way I have enjoyed coffee without sugar, but I gather that the bloom is off of the coconut oil rose for now. Apparently it’s not a miracle food after all.

It’s been eight days since I had coffee, dairy, or sugar. I think I’m feeling a little bit better, no slam dunk at this point. I do get though that I need to change my behavior on many things. Alcohol and ganja are going to be very, very rare indulgences for me at this point. I don’t need the lethargy. I’m seeing the bloom of youth fading a bit faster than I would prefer. Serious action is called for.

Talking Coffee & Older Gals

Therein lies the rub .

Besides, after 40 most women become serious freaks .

They know what they want and how to get it, no more bullcrap .

Plenty of good looking women older than 40 Y.O., don't fool your self into thinking you're Fabian .

It's too dang hot here to have hot coffee .

Thumbs up Good Partners

Kids too ~

So many I know flat refuse to date any woman with children, I figure I have kids so what's the big deal ? .

Same thing, women with some miles on them know what they want and are not afraid to ask, they also know what to do..... .

Too many men are afraid of women and so never really have a satisfactory sex life .
