Boat motors...2 stroke ok?

Hi guys I am preparing to take a small trip into michigan to do some fishing with my son and his three boys. I have an old motor which I thought I would be able to use but looks like it is in too bad condition so now I am planning to go monday morning and am stuck for a motor.

I actually bought one yesterday a 9 hp brand name but name escapes me at the moment. Trouble is it is too heavy for me to wrestle around. I am leery of it too as it seems to leak fuel a bit.

I have been looking for a cheap alternative. Plenty of options from china but none in the store that i can find.

I found one advertised as brand new Hacoga or something similar made in china that a fellow has and I could drive down and pick it up. It is a 4 or 5 hp 2 stroke. I know my dad did not like the 2 stroke much, what do you all think?

My opinion only, two stroke is fine go 10% more on the oil to gas ration favoring the oil. Or better yet for an item that will be used on seldom occasions, look into renting.

2 stroke is great IF it is allowed where you plan to boat. I'd look for an 8hp or 9.9hp clean used freshwater OMC Johnson or Evinrude. You need to know the transom height either 15" or 20" to get the correct motor.

Good luck!!!

Post Two Smoke Outboards

I didn't think they were legal anymore .

You're kinda vague o why not use the one you bought, use only fully synthetic "smokeless" two cycle oil and a new spark plug, most old two smokers I run across with run quite well in spate is old age and severe wear .

Have a great time fishing and post photos of the fish and tell us how you cook them .

I like smoked fish .

I usually filet them and cook on low heat in fry pan with a bit of water salt and pepper and a bit of butter until they turn white, then eat immediately.

Yummmmm!

Yea if it's inexpensive enough but I think 2 stroke will be obsolete eventually. I had a 15hp Evinrude I sold while I could as they are being banned in Ca and already in Lake Tahoe(Ca and Nv) if someone has a private pond or something it would be OK.

Post Fish & 2 Smokers

Yes, that sounds yummy .

About ten years ago, here in So. Cal. Harbor Freight Co. got in these tiny two stroke generators for $99 and almost every Mechanic in the shop bought one, the instructions said to run it no load for one tank full of fuel so for two weeks there were 4 ~ 6 of these things puttering away in the rear Service Alley, I was amazed they could be sold anywhere near Los Angeles .

Many decades ago my step father had an Irwin 32' sloop rig and he bought a tiny British made "Seagull" two stroke engine for it's dinghy, it was tiny~ the size of an electric trolling motor but worked flawlessly and he had other Sailors lined up begging to buy it when he stopped sailing .

Actually there are lots of very simple two stroke good brands that are older and very serviceable available. I have a 1956 Evenrude 5.6 sportsman low hours motor that runs extremely well. With most parts still available.

It is probably more reliable and will outlast most new motors still. Evenrude and Johnson had the majority of the market in the day for a sound reason.

They where pretty well designed with decent quality manufacturing and lasted well. That is why there are still so many still around. Even though the company is gone.

The four strokes tend to be both heavy and expensive. We have no restrictions beyond common sense where you cannot use a two stroke in Canada. To the best of my knowledge. The average smaller motor really does not see much running time over the years.

My old 60 something Johnson 6 hp 2 cylinder is 2 stroke. It has not been used much and was stuck. I figured I could get it unstuck clean things out and go but found play in the piston....so figured it would hammer itself to death if used much.

I ended up buying a slightly used four stroke 3.5 hp. It weighs only 41# so it will be easy for me to handle. It is a tokatsu (or something similar). It is at the boat dealer up in Cadillac and on the way to our campground. I hope it works out.

So now I am the proud owner of four outboards, two of which run. I also have my grandpa's which was made in the thirties? (Evenrude?)1.5 hp, all aluminum. I saw it run 60 years ago when dad got it from Grandpa's widow.

When I bought a fishing boat a while back it came with a Montgomery Ward air cooled outboard motor. The thing would get so hot it would seize and then free up after waiting a while. This cycle would repeat if on a large body of water (once only did I did this). Then I bought the Evinrude.
Unrelated-when I was cleaning up the boat to sell, the effort released a kidney stone (my first)and put me in agony for 3 weeks.

Post Two Stroke Binding Up

FWIW, this indicates the fuel / oil mixture was off, not enough oil in the mix, not any problem with the actual motor .

This is a very common issue with motors that don't have injection pumps ~ when you fill it up and fail to shake the beejeebers out of it the oil settles out of the fuel......

The fact that it didn't actually seize but got hot enough to bind up then freed up after cooling down tells the tale .

You have to work in a boat of lawnmower shop to understand .
