Thinkpad X220. Under $100 on EBay these days. Pop in a $50 256GB solid-state drive. More rugged than most Dells, and it has a nipple-mouse, which is better than a trackpad (IMHO).

O.K., the repair place that assured me it'd be cheap and simple to drop in an SSD left me a message saying he wanted to discuss with me before giving me the $ quote so I assume that means bad news, I'll get over there soon and see what's what .

SSDs are cheap these days (maybe $60 for a good one) + an hour or two to install Windows and migrate data. I don't know what prices are like in SoCal, but the local shop I send people charge ~$100 to install Windows and migrate data.

I don't understand what the SSD thing is, in addition to the laptop ? .

How do I know an E-Bay used one will be any good ? .

TIA, this is an informative thread .

SSD = Solid State Drive, instead of ones with whirring wheels and platens inside, using up less power and makes battery last longer

You guys are the best ! .

Explaining all these things to an old man who's not tech savvy .

I got stuck in horrible traffic this afternoon after swimming in two Desert junkyards for hours and sailed right past (well, inched past anyway) the exit forgetting completely about going to see what the 'puter fix guy says .

Hopefully to - morrow's works will get done soon enough that I can go by and see what's what .

The rest of the old lap top seems fine, screen and so on .

He indicated about $160 ~ $180, So. Cal. is getting really expen$ive these days, good thing my crappy little house in The Ghetto has fixed payments so I can't get forced out .

I bought a cheapo clone kit from Ebay and did it myself. You will need another PC to do the clone. You can even reimage your old HD from the SSD every once in a while so you would have a backup in case the SSD drive failed or you got a virus.
On a related note: We had equipment at work that ran an operating system from pairs of HD's and they ran for at least 20 years (24/7)before they began to fail.

I don't miss the days of Bay Area traffic and 4.5hr commutes home on Friday. I had to go to Portland area a few mos ago and got stuck in PM commute traffic.

You're braver than I ! .

I'll dip into mechanical things but electronics scare me.....

I got up and to work just before sun up, by 09:00 it was hot and I'd finished both jobs so I closed up, cleaned up and drove to the shop, it opened late and the technician guy doesn't work Saturdays, I'll try to get back there Tuesday next and see what's what .

My 2009 Apple laptop still runs like when I bought it. I still use it sometimes for email, www, and for astronomy.

I’ll probably buy a winders machine when I get seriously into image processing. New Macs, especially with serious horsepower, are revoltingly expensive.

I have about 125 in an old pawnshop Dell Inspiron laptop. Good battery. Barely touch it with iPhones and iPads all over.

Post i-Things

Apparently if you can understand them there's much good in Apple products but we tried them and didn't like one bit .

Diff'rent strokes and all that jazz .

It’s what you’re accustomed to. I started with a 48k AppleII+ And 16k language card for Pascal, an external floppy and an Edson MX-80 printer for $2k in the early 1980’s. Smokin’!

I was hardcore Apple only at home but in the 1990’s To 2015 used various Windows boxes at work. My last one at work cost about what my first on cost but it had a multiprocessor cpu, a huge graphics card that cost as much as the computer and 5 TB of disk space. A straight-up image processing behemoth that I really liked. It cut work flow from days to hours. Amazing. That’s my target (brought up to date) for my future desktop purchase. Smoking processors, blasting graphics card and huge storage. And no, I’m not into games and porno!

But I still adore my little Apple laptop. I wish I had a few more oil wells so I could buy a top of the line Apple image processing workstation because despite vast improvements since Windows 3.1.1, Apple operating system is freaking brilliant. I wish I had the balls to relearn Unix so I could deal with the beast in his lair directly. But I’m spoiled.

Recently bought a used 2015 Macbook Pro. The last of the great Macs (has the magsafe adapter). Quad core, 16gb, 2gb ati (well amd but w/e) graphics card, and a 1tb hard drive (SSD) since I like to game on windows (dual booting baby)!

My requirements were pretty simple. Has to be a solid aluminum metal chassis. My last laptop was plastic and basically disintegrated. I kid you not: I was on my laptop and the whole thing started fritzing out. When I went to pick it up, the plastic case separated and that was that!

Nate if you ever need computer help, just come up to the valley. I'll fix you up for beer or green. :p

I used to work in IT and still regularly disassemble my computers and have all of the tools to drop in new hardware. There's still a lot of opportunity for easy disassembly in computers with the exception of the 2016+ Macs.

What computer did you ultimately get?
