LOS ANGELES PORT POLICE SAVE MAN FROM SAN PEDRO ROOFTOP


SAN PEDRO, Calif. – June 13, 2019 – Los Angeles Port Police officers, along with Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department personnel, were able to save a man’s life on Thursday just before he jumped from a San Pedro rooftop.

The incident started at about 11 a.m. when Port Police spotted a person sitting on the rooftop ledge of a seven-story parking structure on the 500 block of South Centre St. Port Police, Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department officials responded.

A mental health professional was brought to the scene to communicate with the subject, who appeared suicidal. During the discussion and as fire officials were about to deploy airbags below, the subject ran to the other side of the roof and approached the ledge. Port Police and LAPD officers were able to grab the subject and pull him to safety.

The person was transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center for evaluation.

“This is a great example of first responders putting themselves in harm’s way to help a citizen in crisis. I’m very proud of the brave actions taken by all the first responders, especially Port Police Officers Francisco Nunez, Stacey Creech, Sgt. Scott Gaines and LAPD Officer Maligi “Junior” Nua, all of whom stopped this individual as he was trying to jump from the roof.” said Port Police Deputy Chief Randy Allen. “I’m grateful to Capt. Daniel Cobos and civilian Harbor Department employee Kristine Kronheim for initially noticing the subject and taking immediate action that enabled this incident to end without any loss of life.”

Not imagined, not made up, not some urban myth from 25 years ago far far away, REAL LIFE .

It's been greatly invaded by yuppies and other rich folks, most of the quaint old houses are still there but the rents are absurd now, good luck affording an apartment there .

I sometimes drive up to the hill where the tourist tower used to be in Western Av. and sit and watch the city wake up ~ it's very peaceful and watching the port that never sleeps is entertaining .

Sadly most of the interesting small shops are long gone .

That 'bad' neighbor hood is still rough and not a place you want your Lady walking after sundown yet the lack of housing anywhere in So. Cal. and the proximity to the ocean keeps the rents high .

In the bigger picture some folks are not ever supposed to buy property, I knew this from my lifetime of traveling and being forced to live in bad places as a child & young man so I but the bullet and bought a house in The Ghetto, yes it's been rough but it's also had it's better moments and as the decades roll by my 'hood has been discovered by the same folks who used to look down their noses at it....

I don't know if you'd still like living in San Pedro, it's different yet the same simultaneously, weird I know but it is what it is .

At UCLA Medical Center a patient committed suicide by running through and breaking a Window that was 5 stories of so high. The did a major retrofit of the Windows after that.

No. But most of the Engines the Engines that the school owned were 6-71 inlines or V 6-71s.

When I worked at the Naval Shipyard the Navy used a lot of 6-71's both right and left hand rotation and a lot of the Ships had V 12-71's and V 16-71's all turbocharged.

The newer ships with more electronics stuff were using various Vs of the 92 Series Detroit Diesels.

The Navy has their own designations for them. A I can't remember if it is 64 or 67 HN9 was an 6-71 inline with right hand rotation.

As you said the in lines were in Boats the others were Generator Engines.

Story time: One of our Guys was working on an Inline 6-71 in the Shipyard Diving Boat. It was getting a excessive blow-by in up in the Valve Cover and out of the breather tube. The Guy diagnosed that as combustion getting past the Injectors. Then he went on leave and the job was passed to me.

I pulled out the Injectors and found no evidence that combustion was passing buy them but reamed the Injector Tubes and re-installed the Injectors and did the timing, valve adjustment and so on and put the Valve Cover back on. Started the Engine and there still was excessive Blow-buy.

I removed the Valve Cover and ran the Engine and there was a lot of blow-by which was puzzling. I eventually was able to see that the blow-by was coming out of the Camshaft roller area.

I removed some of the Engine side covers and peered into the Cylinders through the ports in the Liners and it was clear that all of the Cylinders were badly scored up from I am guessing dirt. That was the cause of the blow-by.

The part in the red outlined rectangle is not an Air Filter it is an Air Silencer. It can block some really huge stuff but not like a regular Air Filter. Hence all of the life of the Engine it was not getting well filtered Air.
The only person there to talk to was one of the Divers. He did not believe me when I told him it was not an Air Filter. He also did not like my fix which was to tell him the Engine needed an overhaul.

Back in the late 1970's I befriended a neighborhood kid who was 15 and wanted to be a Diesel Mechanic, he went to the Harbor Occupational Center and unlike everyone else in his class, made the beat to crap InLine Detroit Diesel 6 71 _run_ ~ along with other miseries it had a bent crankshaft .

Apparently most just took it apart and looked at all the pieces then more or less slapped it back to - gether, he was stoked when it fired up and ran, properly too .

It turns out he wasn't Mechanic materiel and switched to driving big rigs, now he makes more $ than I ever did driving honey wagons for Burbank Studios and complains endlessly, another born with the silver spoon who doesn't grasp how lucky he is .

At the shop we used to call Detroit Diesels "Road Oilers" because they spewed so much oil as do most two cycle engines....

The City of Los Angeles' primary emergency gensets are almost all Detroit Diesels.....

Twins stashed here and there in City Hall, Piper Tech Center and police facilities all over the place .

Listening to you alls talk about Navy days takes me back ~ Uncle Bill was a Submariner in Diesel Boats in early WWII until the accident .

I've forgotten the details but something occurred when submerged and the final result was no more sense of smell, this made him unfit for the submarine service so he wound up filling body bags in the Pacific theater......

He was born & raised in New York City and always loved boats, my earliest memories are of visiting him and going sailing, he sailed until he could no longer .
