The Ghost Army from WWII - artists at work

I was watching a show on Prime called The Ghost Army. Ina nut shell, there were three units - Camouflage, sonic and radio (I think). They basically pulled off 20 deceptions during WWII. They created fake equipment, fake radio conversations and fake sounds of troop movements.

Many of the men came from theater and movies... they sketched on their down time.

A very interesting story.

Some of their art work is here

Bill Blass, who later became Bill Blass the fashion designer was a member of this division.

Fairly realistic copies of real equipment. I too never knew they were deployed to Europe.

I think the history of the second world war in Europe will have to be re written someday. By the time the allied forces landed in Europe. Russian forces had already heavily damaged the German army.

They were pretty much in a state of constant retreat. Since the battle that occurred before Moscow. In late 1942? Without adequate fuel supplies as well they knew they were beaten. I do not think the Germans had any illusions.
