Dishwasher blues

Our dishwasher quit a while ago. I troubleshot it and decided it was not worth repairing since it came with the house and we never liked it. So I did research and decided what I wanted. Found it at Home Depot for the best price. I noticed a lot of comments in the reviews complaining about the delivery but figured it could not happen to me. So waited 3 weeks for the delivery(by 4:00)
So at 7:00 I called(took a long time and several calls to get a live person) and explained it did not show up. LONG hold and unit never got shipped due to BO. So calling again tomorrow and trying to set up a new delivery date. I may just pay $50 more and get it locally-who knows how long it will take from HD.

we bought our house in 2000, we never used it because you still have to scrub pots,so why use a dishwasher.

We replaced ours recently, went to our local store and bought off the floor. Got it home and installed it in about 3 hours.

A few years ago my Sweet embarked on a four year massive refresh of the four bedroom two bath house that included an all new kitchen made larger by moving two walls .

Some where in there she bought a new electric dishwasher and had plumbing modified to suit, we never did use it : the Foster boys weren't allowed to touch it and she and I both automatically wash any dirty dish we see using the /12 sink full of soapy water 24/7 .

When the one Foster boy burned us out 18 months ago the new dishwasher was smoke damaged, the insurance company threw it out unused .

Now, we're coming up on two years out of the house and they're finishing the kitchen and planning to install another dishwasher that she nor I will ever use....

Well the cycles are long but with the right detergent product. The current whirlpool does get the loads really clean. Proudly made in America with Chinese parts.

The wife claims it is far superior to the past owned ones. Although she uses the four hour cycle. You pay the additional cost for the extra insulation. I figured it was a bit of a scam. When I installed it found out otherwise. This machine is really quiet. Even the mechanicals underneath are well insulated.

I guess my point is. If the insurance company is buying one to install. You should be able to buy one that does what they are supposed to do. Reliability of appliances with electronics though is questionable. You would be probably hard pressed to find any new ones without them.

Average price today. Odd in that we too had to wait for one for some time.

After my last episode with the wives washing machine. I found out there is still one manufacturer that produces one model without electroncs. If I had not found this out a used appliance would have been purchased If I had replaced the current one.

It just took a 99.00 electronic part. I examined the part for serviceability after replacing it. Forget that.

The local appliance store has a very limited inventory. They just order it and have it drop shipped to your house. If you want it installed they said call them when you get it. I just rescheduled with HD.
BTW our washer is a 25 year old Kenmore front loader-no electronics. It's needed a water pump(stuff left in pockets ruined it) and a timer ($25 from Ebay)
When we moved I bought the matching 25 year old gas dryer (Craigslist)and rebuilt the wear stuff.

Well for what it is worth. I respect the appliance guy we know. He mentions things. No modern stoves or refrigerators in cottages that are not heated through the winter. I thought was worth remembering.

Overall quality of new appliances is also falling in his opinion. He sells new and used and services them. He was the one that told me that under the General Electric label they still do have one non electronic model stove or washing machine.

General electric sold their appliance division but to who I forget. When white Westinghouse I think purchased Maytag. I thought they might retain at least their washing machines. Instead they just slapped the Maytag name on their own appliances and shut Maytag down. The best built electric stoves came from a manufacture fifteen miles away. Until a son that inherited the company ruined it.

A twenty five year lifespan is about as good as it gets on washing machines. Most do not make it. Industry average was twelve years about thirty years ago.

I felt the Maytag washing machines produced by the past original manufacturer. Could manage about that long of a lifespan the best.

A requirement in our household. The wife is still so busy. If an appliance breaks down. She wants it either replaced or repaired fast. By me or an appliance service guy. I try to do same day but parts availability is not always that fast.

I think everyone knows not to use wire supported white plastic vent pipes on dryers. The lint can catch fire in them. It is best to clean out even the aluminium vent pipes once in awhile.

This may be a very large cause of home fires. One should never leave a house with a clothes dryer running in my opinion. Without periodically removing and inspecting those vent pipes and just into the rear of the dryer outlet. The lint traps never catch all the lint. Plus the dryers will not dry the clothes as fast if the pipe is partially restricted.

It is also suspected that the synthetic fibers going out into a septic field. With the wash and perhaps rinse cycle. Can cause issues with time. They sell a filter to go into the drain line of washing machines apparently to trap it.

I'm sure many here remember Servel gas refrigerators ? .

I've forgotten the name of the manual washing machine that to the very end was a vertical tub, it was cheap and efficient, not really good on your clothes as it wore them out by rubbing .

SWMBO won't accept mis matched clothes washer & dryer, as we have Foster boys they wear out every 10 ~ 12 years or so, she'll maybe allow one repair then off they go .

I tried to get her to buy a Speed Queen machine as they're pretty good but she goes her own way on the house things .

Speed queen was a pretty decent washing machine. I have not seen them in the local appliance stores for some time now. Perhaps they stopped selling them in Canada. The regional distributor was located in the nearby town. They also distributed Panasonic.

Perhaps the first company to introduce decent reliability in televisons. The other one was Zenith. We contracted to provide the distributor service arm for the manufacturer. For all the Canadian Maritime provinces.

When I first started servicing color televisons with round picture tubes. They cost about half the price of a new car. Today the average sale is perhaps 1/50th of a new car. Quality and durability on average are far better and they are basically Chinese.

Even though our home was nearly new construction the dryer vent was run under the house with the vinyl flex hose. It had filled with water and sagged to the ground, pulling it out. A very nasty concoction. I will just keep repairing our washer/dryer if they break. They are both very simple.

Thanx Frank ! . I didn't expect Servel to still be cranking them out but I guess out of the cities they're still useful .

Speed Queen isn't often in stock anywhere because they're not cheap ~ no one wants to have slow moving inventory anymore .
