Daimler needs it's own Elon Musk

Quote:
Daimler CEO Ola Källenius wants to save billions and cancel jobs. But what he specifically wants to achieve, he does not say. A clear course and a bit more courage would be sorely needed.

On Wednesday, Tesla boss Elon Musk announces the construction of a large factory for his electric cars in Berlin . Up to 10,000 jobs are to be created.

Not 48 hours later, Daimler CEO Ola Källenius promises investors and analysts in London to save more than 1.4 billion euros in costs. He wants to reduce jobs and cut back investments on a large scale .

The timing is coincidence, and the two announcements do not mark the rise of Tesla on the automobile Olympus, nor the demise of Daimler, the icon of the German car industry . But Musk's casual ambitions make the misery in which Källenius is involved with Daimler even clearer.

It seems the Germans neglected the EV market for far too long and now they're in a desperate game of catch up. Good thing they still have diesels to fall back on... no wait.

Oh but the diesel is not really gone.

Mazda is bringing their one that meets all pollution requirement to north America. It may be here already in their SUV. Volkswagon also has a new diesel that also meets strict standards. The understanding is it will not be sold in north America. Mercedes and volkswagon have been like two relatives with diesel engine development. So Mercedes probably have one too. Why not targeted for north America makes a lot of sense. North America has cheap fuel compared to most developed countries. So fuel savings with millage is not as signifigant.

Volkswagon has sold diesel cars for years that get almost 100 miles per gallon. Just never in north America. Their diesel cars for the north American market have been targeted for more and more power. Rather than staying at a lower power level and producing far more fuel millage.

The future car diesel will be very small in displacement and very complex. We will not see them in north America I suspect. If you make variable compression they do not pollute nearly as much. The European market is too important to volkswagon.

The new Mazda diesel engine is a constant low compression design. Only time will tell if it is any good. Who can forget they introduced the wankel rotor engine design.

North America is also not really the center of the world. About half of the automotive engines produced worldwide are diesel.

Your information is out of date. Diesel car sales have been declining all over the world as more and more cities announce diesel bans.

German car sales plunge in May as diesel falls out of favour

Diesel car sales slump in France

Sales of new cars fall as UK consumers continue to shun diesel

That will be released in America. If the rumor is true about Volkswagon I am curious what they have done. My take was that if Mazda could do it so could others.

Anyways if true and they give the fuel millage some of the earlier ones did or better. They should sell well again in Europe. I can see the earlier cars being banned totally in many places. Although there may be efforts made to avoid the company facing lawsuits by current owners.

Volkswagon is a strong component of the overall European economy. Projections are for Germany to become a worldwide industrial superpower in the not long distant future. Any place where fuel is about ten dollars a gallon. A car that delivers twice the fuel millage of a gas car cannot be ignored. If it passes European emission standards.
For years they have claimed that increasing the fuel efficiency of gas engines has just about been reached. The rumor also is these new engines will not be sold in America. At the same time they might decide to release a car here that almost nothing would be comparable with. Only time will tell.

So much is in the wind. Volkswagon is by far the largest producer of the electric car at 500,000 in the last year. If they met their proposed production quota. None for export even in the orient yet. All for use in China. They use the Golf platform and none are for export. For all practicle purposes they may also be well in the lead for electric cars. I am not a fan of the Volkswagon company. At the same time it would be stupid to ignore they are currently outselling even the Japanese cars in at least our region.

They have also been into something I find interesting. It will take some time to establish if it is true.

Bull ****, VW barely sold 100k EVs and PHEVs combined in 2018.
VW Group's sales of electrified cars grow 30%
They're one and only EV model in 2018 the Egolf didn't even crack the top ten. Its just a compliance vehicle.

VW is all talk like the rest of the German auto industry.
