A co-worker had a hip replaced, out patient. He was back to work in three and a half weeks.

X2 I always would grab a plate, if my travels took me past the local hospital before work. You fill it they weigh it and it is reasonable in price and good.

Some hospital food in my experience also leaves something to be desired. They may own the patent rights to rubber eggs for example.

I think my knee might have been outpatient, but I have never heard of a hip being done that way.

The food at the hospital would be the absolutely least of my worries in that case. For me food is nothing beyond fuel. Some folks live to eat. I eat to live.

Apparently they are doing same day release now, though places still are there one night or more. I think the main reason they can is the new anesthetic drugs and techniques.

The hospital where the lovely Ms engatwork works has a seafood bisque on certain Fridays that is probably some of the best in Savannah. She says ppl come from the surrounding businesses to eat there during lunch when it is available.

In my own experience, hospital food is right up there with economy class airline ‘food’.

Going in to get the staples out tomorrow. I joked about using a office staple remover-she was not amused.

"Wife got a total hip replacement " well ... what really matters is ... is she better in the sack now? Or was the $ wasted?

Hope she is over the worse of it already. I suppose some painkillers mitigate the after effects a lot. If there is substantial discomfort.

I was surprised at how quickly the nursing staff gets them up and moving. 2 days after the operation she was walking 650' (with a walker)and climbing a small set of steps. Obviously she is in a lot of pain and giant bruises on her leg. Recovery is slow but steady. Other hip is in 3 mos. They want the patient discharged ASAP so they really advocate a home care environment. 1 or 2 days in the hospital is normal.
I had mine in 2011. I broke the ball of the hip bone off. Operated on and they put screws through it. But the 3 months later the ball collapsed. Hence the replacement with a titanium hip.

The County Hospital had me out the next day. Virtually as soon as you can walk using the walker.

Went to physical therapy for about 2 months. Note that right now just sitting here it aches a bit.

Concerning pain after all of these years what I have found is if I start having pain if I start doing the exercises that I did during physical therapy again most of the pain will go away. But, I am lazy and rather then doing the exercises 2x a day I don't do them until after I have pain.

I have arthritis in most of my joints including hips. The artificial hip pain is on par with the arthritis pain and less if I do the exercises and also do some walking.

I had another issue I think is related to the 2 hip operations. I had odd bruising and marks on the top of the foot on the side of the operation and my Knee had swelling. At first I attributed the swelling to fluid leaking out of the areas of the surgery but the swelling persisted for 2 years. And when the swelling went down if I exerted myself it would swell again. I also have reduced range of motion on that knee.

When I tried to restore my range of motion it swells up again.

What I think happened is they used some sort of splint of fixture to pull on my leg during surgery (hence the mysterious marks and burses on my foot) and it damaged something inside of my knee.

If your Wife has enough disipline to continue doing the exercises I think that would save her from the issues that I have had.

Recently I have noticed a problem with tinnitus. Pain relievers like aspirin and tylonol pretty much all can cause or contribute to tinnitus. Since I discovered this i have stopped all pain relievers unless in real pain. I don't really seem to need them any more. If I hurt I exercise more and the pain gets less intense.
