The need for a mobile police scanner.

A few years ago, local sheriffs got into a high speed chase with a bad guy. Speeds exceeded 100 MPH on a 40 MPH street. The driver who was being chased hit a friend's car (she was doing 40 MPH, he was doing 100 MPH while running from the sheriffs) flipping her upside down. She was taken to the hospital; fortunately she suffered no injuries.

Yesterday, local police got into a high speed chase with speeds exceeding 80 MPH in a 40 MPH speed zone. The culprit's car hit another car, totaling it. The people in that car had to be taken to the hospital while the suspects were taken into custody.

At the same time all this happened, I happened to be in the area and could have easily been in the middle of the entire mess. I'm thanking my lucky stars I happened to be a few minutes late to the party. When I arrived at the major intersection just north of the incident, police had already blocked it off to prevent other motorist from going into the area where the crash had JUST occurred.

I'm thinking a mobile police scanner might be beneficial. You could listen to the police scanner for high speed pursuits in your area so you could avoid getting into a collision.

Stop lying. You do not have this many friends, much less this many friends who happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time to experience so much crap.

Good luck with the police scanner. More and more police departments and state agencies are moving to encrypted digital radio systems. Your police scanner will not work if your LEO agency uses such systems.

Your friends seem to have this Forrest Gump-like predilection to be in interesting places at (in)opportune times.

There are cellphone apps that provide the ability to monitor some police frequencies.

The people who got hit said the last thing they thought might happen was to get into a HEAD ON collision with an idiot running from the cops going 100+++MPH.

Sooner or later, with the police choosing to get into hot pursuits of bad guys, your number is bound to come up. If I were you, I'd tighten my seat belt an extra notch or two. Hang up the smart phone and look in your rear view mirror to check for flashing cherry lights in pursuit of a Ford F250 coming up your six at more than 100 MPH.

I get a warm glow just thinking about it.

True that. Speaking of friends, I happened upon the accident scene of the first one. I witnessed the car flipped upside down lying in the grass shoulder off the street. I didn't find out until the next day that the motorist running from the cops had hit my friend and she she had been taken to the hospital.

This. All it takes is being in the wrong place at the wrong time and you can easily find yourself in the middle of a high speed cop chase gone wrong.

The only system I'm aware of that you can't pickup would be OpenSky and no one made scanners for that type. Pennsylvania State Police bought into the system quite a while ago and have had all kinds of problems since then. In 2017 they decided to scrap it and go with Project 25 Phase II which one can monitor with a scanner set up for that mode.

Most locals here in Pittsburgh are on VHF Hi. The 800mHz doesn't get it in hilly areas. My scanners aren't 25 phase ll capable, so if I want to monitor PSP again, I'll have to upgrade. I take a portable on trips but most places now are on 25 phase ll or Motorola x2.

GRE and Whistler are supposed to be good choices but come in around $800.
