When did these become a status symbol? The only thing uglier is the Hummer.

Post Being Hip

That's a very good point but they are indeed status symbols for those who will never go off road in them....

True, they are for people long on money, short on brains. If I would see one though, I would say damn, thats cool.

Post Symbols Vs. Useful

Maybe so (certainly in the Ghetto where I live) but it's possible they're actually good off roaders......

I can't get over the idea that anyone would ever buy a vehicle to impress someone else .

Post I Want.....

The assorted vehicles I own and drive / ride are an eclectic bunch to be sure, I often hear "that's cool / neat" but that's not why they're in my driveway .

Nothing wrong with wanting a G Wagen, I've sat in them at the car show, pretty spiffy .

I've seen military Hummers out doing their thing in the chop, pretty impressive but I'd not want one for free .

The chromed out ones in the hood are just silly .

There are loads of Range Rovers too, nary a one ever dives over a curb stone and in two years they're clapped out like NYC taxis

To each their own .

I loved out 1952 Willys M38A1 ex army Jeep in 1967 when I lived on a farm, I thought it the coolest thing ever although in Winter I preferred my rusted out 1959 Ford F100 because it had a closed cab .

A company called Europa out of New Mexico began federalizing G-Wagens in the 80's, building on Mercedes success in the Paris-Dakar rally. The process was very expensive, so they became high-end desirables.

Those are still the most interesting G-Wagons out there in my opinion. The first generation is getting more desirable because people don't like the new model.

Lorinser (not Brabus) in Germany is selling Swiss military surplus Puch GWagons, starting at $18.000 Euros. Give you a lot of extra cas to build your own dream G.

Or get one from these guys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC604Eta2b4

Porsche Cayennes are pretty reasonable on the used market.

Are you kidding? Really? I haven't really followed car trends in a while.

Yeah, bullet holes aren’t that hard to fix.

Post Ex NATO Vehicles

Actually, that's a very rare thing .

I've known quite a few ex NATO (and U.S. military) vehicles, only the sold as scrap ones had any bullet holes .

I still miss my ex U.S.A.F. 1959 Ford F100 base pickup, it came from Ayers AFB in Ayers, Ma. and apart from the gaping rust holes in the cab and fried Leece-Neville 100 ampere alternator was in VGC, not bad for (IIRC) $25 , running in 1967 .

I foolishly never bought any of the $800 VW Safari ("Thing, in the U.S.A.) ex NATO vehicles, they were all almost perfect and even had gas heaters .
