Why are old Mercedes sedans so inexpensive?

Looking at Domestics, VWS, French cars, Italian, British cars and all outrageous. Mercedes made a much nicer car and a lot more comfortable. Why are they so cheap compared to the rest?

Because they're inevitably run into the ground before being dressed up for sale. The owner will proudly show you a stack of receipts, as if it means something that the battery was replaced with a genuine Mercedes battery seventeen years ago or that the sunroof motor was unjammed just 150K miles ago. The car might have 375K miles on it, but ya know, it's a million mile engine.

They are so well built that there are quite a few still around.

They have come to a place where they are pretty valuable in Europe compared to here.

The 123s were produced in the highest numbers. Of any cars ever produced by the Mercedes company.

Quantity available tends to have an influence on price. Plus as mentioned four door cars never usually make it to the bigger price points as collector vehicles.

The exception to me is the 240ds with the manual transmissions. No other manufacture ever produced anything quite like that car.

The daughters used to call them tractors as the dogs could identify them as being on the way home well before they where visable. The dogs even indicated to the daughters I was on the way.

We live in a low enough population density area that they are still quite usable here. The main trunk highway is travelling at 75-80 but the low traffic density does not slow up other vehicles. If I am puttering along at 60 miles per hour on it. They can stay with traffic on the secondary highway roads.

many european cars had the same setup in the 80's and 90's (4 cyl diesel, manual, rwd) it's just that most weren't sold in the us

People tend to be afraid of old Mercedes. They hear horror stories about reliability. The truth is the old ones are pretty easy to work on and reliable if you keep up with maintenance.

I did manage to buy a Jaguar XJ-S for $1250 a few months ago, so it's not just Mercedes that can be had for cheap.

83 300D Turbo with manual conversion, early W126 vented front rotors and H4 headlights 400,xxx miles
08 Suzuki GSX-R600 M4 Slip-on 22,xxx miles
88 Jaguar XJS V12 94,xxx miles. Work in progress.

Probably hold their own against most other four door cars of their era. Not that any really bring a large price.

Now a minty early 60s fintail I would want. Over the American built four doors car of that era.

These guides are considered corrupt in north America. As are all used car price guides in north America.

108's are steadily increasing in value-especially the 4.5. And there were a lot of them.
