I saw this and since we had put together a list of alternatives at the office, here's the gist:

If you don't have hand sanitizer, the following items will kill all the germs. We checked this out with two docs and a biologist.

See the caveat after!

  • standard household chlorine bleach at normal concentration
  • hydrogen peroxide diluted like the drugstore sells it
  • any isopropyl or ethyl alcohol that is 70 degrees or better (equiv of 35% ) or 70 proof
  • properly diluted carbolic acid-- the original disinfectant that Dr. Joseph Lister found would disinfect operating rooms + instruments and reduce infections. Dangerous to touch above 5% 1-2% recommended
  • Diluted ammonia if you can stand the smell.

So what common products can substitute as bacteriocidics? Here are some:

  • Windex, undiluted
  • All cat urine detergents (they have peroxide)
  • All "oxy" whitening products
  • 20 Mule Team borax powder/Boraxo detergent
  • Lysol in any form
  • Vinegar (white 5%)

Caveat: these may dry skin so use aloe or skin cream periodically to prevent cracked skin!

Dangerous products not recommended:

  • Boric acid
  • Toilet bowl cleaner (very strong)
  • Acetone/nail polish remover
  • Turpentine
  • Commercial diesel fuel or gasoline (not recommended because additives may be poisonous if absorbed into skin. Tend to destroy human immune systems and liver)
  • Oven cleaner
  • Concrete washer
  • Trisodium phosphate (TSP)
  • Drano or lye

Be careful with this stuff, please

I saw that.What's with that?
I think Pharmco X used to be sold, it's 200 Proof. I don't think they sell it anymore.

If there's nothing else, use hot water. It's preferable to doing nothing.

Hand sanitizer is too viscous, and it will not flow through fuel injectors properly.
