2004 Mercedes CL55 AMG
Need some input, a friend who moved abroad is offering me his 2004 CL55 AMG, got 134K miles, rebuild transmission and top end rebuild. Exterior and interior are flawless. One thing that I know off is that needs to be addressed are the notorious ABC struts. They are not that crazy expensive anymore, but still will cost over $2000,- and are not that hard to install myself.
Always had a weak spot for these cars, especially the CL55, he's asking $4500, what sounds like a steal to me. Beside the struts anything else to look out for?

Yeah, they are neat cars, but my initial reaction after reading that it has had a trans rebuild and a top end rebuild is that this one has had the guts driven out of it. That said, if I had the chance to inspect the car in person maybe I would change my mind, but my initial reaction is not in favor of this particular example.
My $0.02,

Jorn do you have an unlimited budget to maintain a 135k+ mile AMG car. If yes then go for it.

My nephew has one.
It is tighter in size than I like. His wife won’t drive it. It is a money pit and a cop magnet. “When it is running, I love it.” Is his point of view. I told him that he works hard, makes good money, can afford it, so consider it a toy that gives him pleasure.

Never, but I always make it work somehow. But you have a good point and this isn't really the time to splurge money into expensive toys.

So, after living on a diet of used Accords, he and his wife, from similar unsuccessful parents, have built a good life together. He now runs his own insurance agency and it is quite successful, they have a lovely home and three kids. When he called me up that he had a lead on a late model CL55, and that he was having it checked out by someone he trusted, he asked me what I thought. “Paying for it and running it will not be a problem moneywise.” I said do it. I was measurably older than you in my first German luxury car, and they drive like nothing else. You like cars, the cost is not an impediment, so I think you should do it.

They're nice cars but will eventually wear you down financially. The CL should stand for CraigsList.....
