The internet has turned out to be a mixed blessing for car enthusiasts. It concentrates the entired countrys resources onto one car at the click of a few keys, which means that cars which could reasonably have been expected to fetch a few thousand in the local market are now at the mercy of a country wide sales floor so prices go thru the roof. So regular folks are priced out and they become toys for the super rich again. Like when they were new.

The online auctions bring high saies, as you noted because the whole country is watching. No worries about the right person being in the room who is interested in your car.

Yea it's amazing for a VERY expensive car how many were sold. In the 80's I remember seeing a vehicle hauler with new 560SL's parked on the street, went to take a look and almost fell over when I saw the sticker. I have a hankering for a 113 Pagoda but will probably go with a 107 since I want to drive it and a 113 is too valuable to drive around. My stable will be limited to 2 vehicles due to size constraints. I like to browse BAT just for entertainment but it's pretty informative also. A lot of "professionals" in the comments and people that scrutinize vehicles that never bid.

I'd buy a pagoda with cosmetic needs and fix it mechanically and drive it a lot. Lovely cars. The 107s are nice too.

Not sure how BAT works, but wonder how many of those "sales" actually are completed.

Plus, they don't have the money pit hydraulic top mechanisms which started with the succeeding R129. The only thing I don't like about the 107 is that if you are over six-feet tall, legroom starts to become interesting, primarily due to the wide console and oversized steering wheel limiting the angles you can adopt with your legs. You can install a smaller diameter steering wheel, at least in the pre-airbag models, but then the steering wheel rim starts obstructing the driver's view of the guages...

I've only sat in a 107 once and took it for a brief drive round a parking lot. 79 450SL. What I recall was that I could get my legs comfortable only by pushing the seat back so far that the backrest angle was too steep for me to sit comfortably. The back of the seat contacted the corner of the trunk where the canvas top was stored and so could not be reclined futher. If I did recline it enough to be comfortable for me, the seat was too far forward and my legs were contorted. I'd really like to have anohter more in depth look at one to see if it really is just too cramped for me. I'm 5,10 or 5,11 I think.

I would think you could get comfy. The Germans grow pretty large.

I Think I would have someone bidding on my car to bring the sales up. Even if your undercover bidder wins, that’ll bring the comp prices up.

I suspect that is fraud.

Here's another 560SEC on BAT. This one's not bringing big bucks yet but we'll see what happens. I think there are more MB on BAT than any other Marque.

The rear spoiler/wing must have killed the auction. This is a $10K+ Los Angeles CL SEC if you ask me.

We have a member here who bought a late 300SE on BAT a couple of years ago, paid close to $7K for it and the car looked pristine in the pictures, beautiful. He was pissed because it still needed $4K or more to get the car all sorted out and he was doing the work himself.

Found mine for $2500 on CL and spent around $5000, doing most of the labor myself to get it right and make it a solid dependable daily driver.
