Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are all visible in the evening. Mars was at Opposition this month over the last couple of weeks. ie Closest to earth. I've been sketching it from my backyard with my small telescope and got a series of 12 pencil sketches of it wich I think are quite neat. Be quite a few years before the next opposition I believe.

Haven't had any luck spotting any of the Leonids. Don't know whether it has been bad timing on my part or what. I've got a clear view of Orion and a dark sky but so far, nada.

Hah! FINALY spotted a meteor. Oddly enough, it was at 6:30 AM this morning with a clear blue sky. Spent the last few nights craning my neck up at the night sky without a sighting.

Thumbs up Star Gazing

Dammit .

Los Angeles has too much ambient ground light to see any stars .

I can see the occasional satellite but that's it .

Gotta get out into the desert, or take a drive up Mt Wilson. There's a reason they put the observatory up there.

Post Out Of Town

I just spent two consecutive weekends out in the Desert, I drove two days to Bakersfield via back roads then Death Valley .

Trouble was, by the time night fell this old man was plumb tuckered out .

We did do some star gazing in Beatty, Nevada just before sunup ~ I was upon a Motorbike and it was bitterly cold but I had to look a while before going in search of coffee .

Right now the Angeles Crest Highway is closed, you cannot reach Mount Wilson .

Most of my skywatching these days is usually searching for space junk. It's amazing how many Russian rocket bodies from the 90's are out there...

Post Angeles Crest Highway Closed

Supposedly because of damage from the Bobcat fire (remember that a few months ago ?) ~ apparently it's still burning somewhere far on the back side of the mountains .

I drove up there and you have to turn around at the Mt. Wilson cut off .

The parking lot there is jammed with parked cars from the local hikers, plenty of trails in that area .

I'm sure I could squeeze through the barricades on my Motocycle but the older I get the less I risk getting tickets and Forest Rangers these days are not the friendly guys they were in the 1950's.....
