I have actually started these engines and its a miracle they actually start, because they are pretty poorly machined.

Vintage Diesel Engines
The small lawnmower sized gasoline engine used to start industrial Diesel engines was called a "pony engine" and they were on old Caterpillar engines for decades .
English "Lister" Diesel engines are still being made and used in India : https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=old+lister++diesel+engine The water pump engine in Punjab (video) isn't going to last too long with zero oil making it to the rockers...

Yes but ;
This engine had shrouds over the valves until the guys making it run removed them . I'm quite familiar with open rockers, these are not them .

I worked for an outfit that had a "Manitowoc" crane/dragline, was built in 1948, a year younger than me! They still own it, they closed their doors so there it sits. It has a 6 cyl. caterpillar engine about 6 ft. long, a two cyl pony motor (with a 2 speed trans) to start it, a hand crank to start the pony. a plaque specifies (among other things) "Max engine speed - 1800 RPM" On one particular job we would start it 1st thing in the morning, every day. Didnt use it one day & forgot to shut it down. It burnt less than ½ a gallon in 24 hours.
This place (near me, I've been there quite a few times) (kids LOVE this place!): https://www.agsem.com/exhibits has among other things, the last piece of heavy equipment left from building the Panama Canal, a huge Caterpillar bulldozer. It is used there during exhibitions. Works fine. anyways, , , ,
