Stopping The SPAM

" The phone companies know where the calls are coming from. If properly motivates, I expect they can do something about it. " .

Yes and no ~ the spammers use many different paths to try and hide the source of each call, this makes it difficult to block them and keep blocking them as they can switch up very quickly .

I too have the "possible spam" notification on my cell 'phone, if I see any incoming call has my same three first numbers I know it's spam, 100% of the time, no exceptions .

I stopped answering my land line completely , had an old friend coming in from out of state Sunday and told him not to call my landline, of course he did, I'm glad that -one- time I decided to answer my home 'phone .

I haven't had a landline in 20 years. Spam calls are a major problem on my cell but recently Verizon has implemented a "possible spam" feature which identifies such calls when they come in. So when I see that on the phone I just push the red button. Occasionally calls come in that are not identified. What I do is wait a few seconds after answering before speaking. If I hear a machine bleep on the other end I hang up and block the number. Over 95 percent of my calls are spam.

I get calls from a "healthcare administrator." It's usually a woman, but since my new idea I've only got one call and it was from a man. The next female "healthcare administrator" who calls, will get asked is she can help me with the big hard on I have that won't go away. Maybe that will get me on their no-call list.

I'm getting pestered with car extended warranty sales calls, too.

I tell them that I would be more than happy to discuss their product but that we first need to discus their relationship with Satan. So far no takers. Odd.

Spam calls stopped for a while so kind of forgot about this but now they are back so I was newly motivated to find a solution. Using my VOIP phone service (Basictalk) I can place my phone on "do not disturb" with a command from the phone and the calls will go to my Basictalk voicemail (which I have never used). Then when I wake up I can take the DND off and check for messages. Does everything I wanted. Didn't think to look beyond the phone before.

Those people are relentless. A couple of times I answered the call as opposed to clicking away, they give you a key to press for a do not call option which is not effective. A couple of other times I’ve clicked to talk to a representative because, by golly, yes I do need to extend my warranty. Once I tried to explain that my cars are way past warranty coverage, no way to get it back, that got sneering from the sales agent.

The next time I said yes I do need to extend my warranty, she asked me the make model and year, I told her I have a 1967 Ferrari 330GTC. She said that one is too old, do I have any other cars, I said ‘no that’s my only car.’ I don’t seem to be getting that one as much since then, who knows.

Yea it is irritating. We have our old Ca number so the calls originate in mostly our area code but in tiny, obscure towns that anyone would know dosen't have a business presence.
I'm trying to get DND to work correctly so I can try this out.

The other day, I had 19 calls from "Apple Support, your system has been compromised" in one hour! I don't know if they had a bug in their autodialer or if they were testing to see how many calls it would take to break my answering system. Since all the calls had the same spoofed CallerID , I blocked it at the carrier and that finally put an end to it.They don't get more annoying than that.

Better But......

Here in California they just (June 2022) made some legal change that sharply reduced the endless robo calls we get but, several times a day I get calls in my land line that there's no one listening and not the usual machine that hears you say "hello" and transfers to you a person or recording....

What's the point of these calls ? .

TIA, I'm going outside now to yell at some clouds .

Tony H 08-05-2022 12:51 AM

I think I heard you yelling:D Almost all the calls we get originate from Ca since we have a Ca #. They use the most ridiculous locations for the caller ID. I got a call from Lake Isabella today. Like any one operates a business from there.
We have our original landline number from 1989 still but it's on VOIP.

Those dang clouds didn't listen ~ there's more of them today .

I just saw a rusty XKE project sell for $78000 on BAT. If only my crystal ball had not been broken when I sold my So Cal XKE for $4000

Timing

It's always like that ~ I've been giving away old projects just to get rid of them .

When I was young and healthier I'd buy like mad between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve then set to work and by April when the tax returns came in through end of Summer I had plenty of inventory to sell, almost everything sold to the first person who looked .

A rusty Jaguar ~ sounds like a bad nightmare to me  .

Placing the phone on "do not disturb" has stopped the calls during sleeping/resting but the second I turn off DND they start coming in. It's almost like there is some kind of messaging that our phone is available. I have been bombarded by calls that the ID begins with V followed by 15 or so numbers. Finally answered one and there was just silence. Did a little online research and found the message will not play unless you say "hello". I guess that's how the caller knows not to waste time leaving a message. So I said hello and a very convincing caller called me by name and started talking. I said are you a real person? The talking paused and then continued. It was a Camp Lejeune lawsuit call. Not enough that I have to watch the endless TV commercials. There must be a lot of money at stake.

They Never End

I bet the Veterans who sign up never get a dime of the $ .

I get these calls, they ebbed for a while but now are starting up again, they have timed how many rings before my machine picks up and hang up just before it clicks on .

I'm sure there's a way to stop this nonsense but as long as they make money at it we're going to suffer .
