Don't the instructions for fix-a-flat say get the tire serviced ASAP? It might not be good for the rubber.

Tom ;

You never did say if alloy or steel rims, it may not matter as an hour with the rotary wire brush means serious corrosion .

The black goop is good stuff, I hate it though .

I just this year tossed out two Michelin Defenders that still had 70 % tread left but the side walls began leaking after 3 - 1/2 years .

If you see any tiny cracks in the rubber and you're needing to add air, time to junk those tires before they fail on your at speed .

I'd think there to be very good money in selling un corroded wheels from California to those in the rust belt but maybe not ~ my sister has a 2003 Chevy truck with one badly corroded wheel that leaks like a sieve, I told her to take a picture of the wheels on the ground so I could go find one locally and ship it t her, too much work she says .

I stayed away for Michelin tires for many years. Just experienced too many rim leaks with them. This was long ago though.

Never experience the same frequency with other brands. I also believe I was far from alone with that issue.

Leaks on old tires

If you have any dry rot or weather checking on the sidewalls it is probably time for new tires. I purchased a 2003 ML320 that had been sitting in a carport for 2 years. The Toyo tires on it had about 10K on them but the two left tires had been facing the sun for those two years and had a little dry rot that was barely noticeable. I had to add air about once a month to those two. I took it on a long trip and was going about 80 when the sidewall on the front tire let go. The rear tire was starting to de-laminate at the side wall also. Both right tires looked fine. I'm glad It was an ML and I wasn't pulling a trailer on that trip. It felt like I might have lost a wheel weight at first but then became a very noticeable shake in the steering. When I pulled over to see what was wrong I was surprised to see how bad it was. The early MLs were sure rigid body on frame trucks. I could pass my hand between the ground and the remains of the tire. Believe me tire shopping when you are 500 miles from home is not fun or cheap.

Post Michelin Tires

I love them too .

Michelin takes much pride in making "green" tires, whatever they do it means much shorter tire life .

As Dave said, if you need to ad air more than every six months, check / service the rimes & valve stems first then toss out those tires with lots of tread on them, your life may depend on it .

You should have gone for the black tires like I did. Those green ones are suspect.

Thank you for your comments. I have had many similar things happen.

I have ordered two new Michelin tires. I'll have them put on back and the two that have already gotten the clean and seal on the front.

In three seasons the truck is driven nearly every weekend pulling my 20' enclosed trailer with a light load. During the winter it mostly sits out back so the snow plow does not throw salty snow on it.
