Tool Chest

I'm on the market for a bigger tool chest. I've got a mix match of some smaller Craftsman and older boxes, but I'm getting tired of them and want to spend a bit more than my previous budget allowed.

Here's my quandry at the moment. I'd like not to spend more than $500.

Which of the below would be my best bet? I've got all three priced at $500.

Here's what I'm looking at:
  • Mac Tools Economizer 2000 (not ball bearing slides) (pictured below)
  • Kobalt 42 in wide stainless, used (pictured below)
  • New 42 iin wide box from Home Depot/Lowes/Tractor Supply

Go with the stainless Kobalt. Nice hat in the first pic. I have one real similar to it.

I wouldn't as I won't spend a dime in Harbor Freight.

Was going to suggest the same

How about browse through Craigslist for a used box? I picked up a Snap on for a song

The Kobalt looks great but I'd take the MAC first.

REWIND....Re-read, since the MAC isn't ball bearing my pick would be the Kobalt.

Good luck!!!

Not having ball bearing slides would be a deal breaker for me

That's where I've been looking. $500 isn't going very far.

I've been told to hit up the Mac, Matco and SnapOn trucks as they might have old boxes they've taken in on trade in, but I'm doubting that they'd sell me anything for what I'm looking to spend.

Well, Kobalt Stainless got nabbed just as I was making arrangements to pick it up.

I think I'll go take the hour and a half drive and see what the Mac box looks like.

Found this one. Interesting, but I think the Mac is the better bet.

This guy bought it in 1990 for $4800 and wants $300 for it.

Rollaways

I'd grab that Snap-On box if you can .

I have old, Kenndy boxes and others, I don't think any have the ball bearing glides, once you have one, nothing else will do .

I'd not be shy about haggling with the tool truck guys, they typically have many more old trade in rollaways in storage .

Maybe put a 'wanted' add on craigslist ? thee are many flakes out there but many more people hurting...

Pawn Shops too can be great places to look .

I'd go for that used Snap On box too.

I test all of them by opening and closing the drawers to see how smoothly they function. Milwaukee seems to make a quality tool box.
