Lost password costs $260m

I would be crying like a 5 yr old. Losing that amount of money due to a password is just insane. My PW's are backed up on multiple locations.
https://www.foxnews.com/tech/programmer-who-could-lose-hundreds-of-millions-in-lost-bitcoin-shares-painful-memory

Quote:
Stefan Thomas, the programmer who could lose $260 million worth of bitcoin because he can't remember his password, said there's "no chance" he'll ever recoup his lost fortune, calling it a "painful memory."

"It's not like I barely don't remember it," Thomas told NBC's "Today" show. "It's there's no chance of remembering something that complicated from 10 years ago."

Thomas lost the password for his IronKey hard drive, which contains the keys to a digital wallet with 7,002 bitcoin. The hard drive gives users 10 guesses to remember their password before the content is lost forever. Thomas has used eight of those 10 attempts and come up empty every time.

I read that as well, it must be heartbreaking. We use IronKeys at work and I'm surprised there isn't a way around it, at least to hack into it and reset the count. Of course without people like this guy there wouldn't be any coins to mine.

I guess I think to much like a 'poor' man but if I put $260m somewhere that requires a password that if lost means its gone.... I am going to have the password in several secure locations in safes, bank safe deposit box, flash drive, picture .... and anything else I can think of. This is not a web site where the password can be reset.

If it is digital, it can be hacked. This not about hacking the block chain, just his HD password.

I find it rather amusing frankly. Some guy cant remember a 10 year old password to imaginary money. Might have to try living back in the real world for a bit. Might be a bit to much for him though.

Arm hell, for that amount of money I'd have had it tattooed on my willy!

Ouch! Keep in mind, it wasn’t worth a fraction of that 10 years ago. Revert back to the arm, please!

How about the user name. If someone gets your user name all they would have to do is quickly enter ten obviously incorrect passwords and poof, gone. Scorned women, and men women will do extreme things. That means no-one but yourself should know the user name also.

I would think if it could be hacked he would have paid someone to hack it. Supposedly these cold storage devices are dam near bullet proof.

BTC is no more or less real than the money in your bank account. I can go to a BTC ATM and make a withdrawal.

I was reading a book and an interesting argument was made. The only reason the $1 bill in your wallet has any value is that we agree that it does. Inherently, it is a piece of paper with ink on it. No more value than the picture a parent puts on the fridge that their kid drew. The only reason anything has value is because we agree it has value.

As for the money in your account, it is 0's and 1's. Same as the BTC I have invested it. I access the BTC account the same way I access my credit union account. I see no difference.

Who would you trust with that information ? and you have no way of oversight. Not sure why the blockchain fails on this point. If it can be documented the coins were transferred to him and shown to have never been transferred away ...

Which is why I use “password” on all my sites for a password.

What could possibly go wrong?
