It’s a small point, not surprising that you cannot concede it.
I freely concede the relative occurrence of these four words, never went against it. This is the first I heard you seek such a concession. I also recognize the difference in pronunciation among them. No clue why you fail to. I await your next spin to claim this is now some third argument

My argument is hard to beat here. And that argument is that the word Fossett as in bathroom faucet (all voice to text) is going to be used 10 to 20 times as often, a very conservative estimate, as the proper name Fossett. Again, did not have to type out the latter. How many people have you known named Fossett? You might think that the best and brightest at Apple would understand probabilities A little better. Same thing for a proxy. OK, right there it went with a stranger first choice before settling on that. The word I spoke, “epoxy” is almost certainly used in the world a lot more than the two word phrase “a proxy.“ And used, a rough guess, 500 times more often in business or casual conversation as the name of the Florida ghost town “Apoxsee.”

Apoxsee, epoxy, epoxy, Apoxsee.

I could’ve said “testing, testing” before that sentence, or should have maybe. At any rate, it’s getting better on this word. But if you take the first syllable from a long “e” sound slightly in the direction of a short “a” sound, The rocket scientists at Apple who put that part together once again will helpfully conclude that of course, you were referring to the ghost town in Florida which was perhaps featured in motion pictures in a parallel universe or two.

All that said, voice to text is often pretty amazing. Which makes silly annoyances like those I obsessed over right here stand out in sharp relief.

There is no common difference in the pronunciation of the name Fossett and the well known household item kitchen faucet. I pronounced those two words identically just now, that sentence was all voice to text. The software only perceived a difference because the giant database connected the word kitchen with the word faucet and not the proper name Fossett.

Your idea aside, the dictionary type places disagree. Did you miss post #27 ?

Not interested in the ivory tower dictionary on this issue. My ear hears no difference in the pronunciation between the two collection of letters and syllables. Oddly enough, the voice to text software also detects no difference.

This is what you do. You argue an absurd point into the ground because you can’t bear to not be correct in all matters. Have at it, cover yourself in glory.

What I like most about the iphone is the ability to get help from Apple 24 hours a day on the phone. I just call the Lenox Square store in Atlanta and get an Apple genius - if the store is closed it still sends me to a live person.

For example the silly phone would not ring. I called Apple and found that I had mistakenly slid the mute button on the left to Orange which is mute. I had already spent thirty minutes looking in Settings, etc. before making the call.

So I likely will not go to an android phone. The quality of the iphone is very good too. I have the XR.

Get a grip pal. I pointed out that your concept of how those words are pronounced is not in sync with the vast majority. It fell right into the Boston thing. It was you sir that took to challenging my correct assessment. But no blood no foul; this place is where we banter about differences of opinions, even when there is a clear correct one

It is unseemly to whine so about the iPhone given how useful it is in so many ways. I got on a John Prine/Steve Goodman kick a few days ago, was going through a playlist and heard for the first time in ages an old song Goodman performed now and then: “It’s a sin to tell a lie.” Goodman quipped that it’s a song he used to do when he was recording under the name Fats Waller. Minutes later I am listening to a YouTube of the very same Fats Waller, whose rendition of the song did not impress me. I much prefer Goodman’s.

I found two more recordings of Goodman on the song, as well as some from old stars of yesteryear, including John Denver and even Elvis the king himself. His version was uninspiring to put it kindly. Also found an excellent tutorial demonstrating the chords that Goodman uses.

Here is one of the better versions.

This version also very good:

Fossett f-AA-s-ih-t fos-set-t Fos-sett?!

f-AA-s-ih-t? That’s gibberish. Someone trying to create cred out of thin air.

I have perused many a dictionary and I have never seen a description for pronunciation resembling that train wreck of would be syllables.

You actually think you can tell me to not believe my ears, instead believe some incoherent web dictionary entry? Dude, dude I heard the pilot guys name mentioned in the media many times. And it’s pronounced just like an American Standard faucet, IOW it’s pronounced like Fossett. Or sink faucet. Or aviator Fossett. The preceding phrases all voice to text. I was focusing intently on pronouncing the word the same way each time. Context is the only touchstone they are using. While most people go their whole lives without referring to someone named Fossett, we plumbers deal with a steady diet of weeding out the Fossetts.

I dunno ... am I the only one who finds a difference in pronunciation between these 2 words? I thought my fancy HS AP English stuff was top notch. Perhaps it has failed me.

THE DONGLE

When they first removed the old style headphone jack from the iPhones, I read talk of needing a “dongle” to do this or that. I saw a photo of one years back that looked like a miniature truss. I now understand however why one might want “a dongle.“

I found one by Belkin, promising, not cheap, $33 or so. Less complicated than the one I saw in the photo. And their reputation is good, AFAIK. Never had trouble with one of their products. Photo here:

But the reviews are lousy. They get stars on Amazon but some really bad reviews, I don’t get it.

Amazon also offers a no-name stand-in for the same product for eight dollars and pennies from an outfit named “Belcompany.” Reviews also not kind.

Anybody know if there is a quality item out there that can do the trick?

I had one of those adapters. Seemed to be a solid part.
I though it reduced sound quality. Then it created a buzz.
Eventually it died, no sound at all.
This Progression took place in less than 10 days.
Free return!
I tried Apple AirPods via Bluetooth. Sound was way too harsh. Also returned.
You can try a pair of Taotronics for around $40 they sound acceptable at that price.

This just: Your CMAC buddy is of the opinion that the 12 mini is not as good a phone as the first gen SE in many regards. It has some nice software improvements, I like the way you can easily swipe down the control panel screen from the upper right corner - has the percentage of battery charge in larger font than in the past, but just a gauge outside of the app, which is fine - seems to be more useful item that on the previous phones, which for me were a major PITA to bring up or get rid of. Maybe I never fully understood the mechanics of them, I don’t know.

And I’m hoping that one of these days the much touted 5G speed will kick in. For now, I maintain that the touch cursor action on any sort of composition screen is defective at best. I have a cursor arrow app installed, If not for that I’d be in real trouble on this phone.

My old 6S had a cursor movement key right on the sideways screen. The geniuses at Apple decided to get rid of it.

There was an app available from my first iPhone, a 5S, a deluxe composition page with forward and backward delete, and much easy movement of cursor. It’s been a while, but I think it was called “arrow note.”

It disappeared for some reason. Nothing that Apple has offered since, standard or app form, has been as good. I don’t get it.
