How many Mercedes have you sent to the crusher?

Having been on a lot of Volvo forums over the years I’m shocked by the sheer amount of cars the “enthusiasts” have sent to the crusher. Just bored at work and wondering if the Mercedes community does the same.

It’s a way to get lots of parts. I know that none of the ones I sent to the crusher were worth saving. Not a single one cost me more than $1000, most were $300 or less. I doubt that many of us get into the hobby by saying, “I really want to be a junk man.”

I don’t even know how many I’ve sent to the crusher, but I’m pretty confident it’s more than 10.

It’s either the enthusiasts do it, or they end up in a pick-a-part where they seem to have the saddest end with tons of useful parts being destroyed. When enthusiasts get them, they are far more likely to be taken apart meticulously saving anything of value.

Out of the 15 owned, zero went to the crusher. No idea where they went after I sold them. I miss every single one of them and want to buy most of them back.

I have been driving for over 50 years. I never sent one to the crusher. I trade them in, even gave a few away for the charity deduction, or handed them down to family members, but all the cars were running and of some use to someone.

I’ve had about 8 Mercedes and only had to scrap one due to an really bad accident. I’ve had 10 volvos and scrapped a 244 Chevy v8 conversion. Everyone wants the v8 but I guess when it’s free it’s no good. Sold or traded everything else.

8 or 10. Nothing crushed worth saving. I scrap them when they are no longer safe due to rust.

Smile You Have It _Backwards_.......

I buy old dead vehicles and bring them back to life again .

I've bought quite a few very nice cars from junkyards, they were just neglected .

As I used to run an Indie VW Shop/Sales Lot/Junkyard I did send more wrecks or rusted to unsafe VW's to the crusher but as mentioned, almost every usable part was carefully harvested and saved for re use (I built salvage reconstructs for decades) .

A good thread I think .

I sold one W123 300D to a yard in Walton, KY - an MB only yard.

edit - it was the "European Connection", in Falmouth. I was close...by like 45 minutes...

place is out of business now, not sure what happened to the cars (probably crushed)

-that 300D was slow though...

Wink Slow M-B Diesels

If they're a 5 cylinder and scary slow, there's a problem .

I've had NA OM617's and once properly tuned and with good injectors they no longer smoked, started easily close to freezing and had no problems keeping up with traffic .

I was thinking about this '240D's are dangerously slow' idea to - day as I drove my 393,000 + miles slushbox equipped one in Los Angeles traffic with the AC on full, it wasn't speedy nor even quick but it had zero difficulty keeping up apart from those pesky freeway on ramps .

No smoke either .

Post Unimogs

? Are all the NATO surplus one gone ? .

They used to be cheap, you had to watch for rust though .

Cheaper with gasoline engines .

Once I found a rust free 280SE 4.5 at the Pick n Pull that looked like it was driven there. I managed to get the rear end and some parts during my lunch time. When I went back the next day it was stripped and ripped.

When I was in Germany I did get T-boned in my 250SE by a drunk driver. Car was totaled.
