This seems like the best idea this thread has produced.
Too bad it's being trashed by off topic bickering that has no place here.

Just went on RV share. Found a 2016 26' class C. Base rental is $160 a night. Total rental for 7 days is $1,600. Only allow 100 miles a day. Overage is $.35/mile. You get 3 hrs of generator use a day. I overages are at $3/hr.

A one week rental could hit close to $2k.

Definitely cheaper than buying and figuring out you don't like it but still pretty dam pricey.

Class A RVs for significantly higher.

My rental experience was a positive one. We did 2 rentals. Family of 3. My initial inclination was for a small C class without slides. (van based and less things to break was the thought)
The 1st was a Cruise America midsize class C (25ft) with no slides for a long weekend. The 1st night, since this was our 1st experience with RV stuff, we docked right in our own driveway. That allowed us to figure out what all we needed and load up for a couple of days outing. Next day off to a local state park to see how that would work out, I cannot recall if we did 1 or 2 nights now. Last day was a high $ RV resort near the return location. We found the C OK but somewhat cramped without the slide outs.
2nd rental was much the same but with RvShare (https://rvshare.com/rvs/details/1458216) was our vehicle for the long weekend. Since we now had an idea what all was needed for a short trip we did not dock at home. Couple of days at a KOA and a day at a county park. Really liked the layout and extra room the slides gave.
Soon after a nice used Class A popped up for sale and off we went.

If you want to peruse a bunch of opinions on all types of RVs and see all the fun things that malfunction/break/ect have a look at the forum at irv2.com. It reads a bit like the diesel discussion section here at times. ;-)

I figure for that kind of money, one could easily rent a mid grade hotel room for less money and less hassle. Continental breakfast, cable television, hot showers, etc etc.

Also, sometimes you'll find genuine criminals floating around RV parks. Who needs that?

100 miles a day? Whats the point in that? Give Outdoorsy a try. I had them as a client years ago when they were getting off the ground -- its like a Turo or Airbnb for RVs.

$170 a night, 100 miles a day, overage @$.35/mile. Generator 4 hrs a day, $3/per hr after that.

I get the costs. RV's are expensive to maintain. Generators need to be serviced ever 250 hrs. Things break. They are costly to repair.

If someone only plans 1 or 2 RV trips then renting is a good option. For someone who wans to go more frequently and/or on long trips....not so much.

We bought a 2008 Winnebago on a 24' Sprinter 3500 chassis with 80,000 miles on it. seems very clean. I have been trying to figure out what all the buttons and such work.
coming home it was pretty windy. It kept me busy with the steering trying to keep up. I'm gonna try a new set of shocks. If it is still squirrely I will look at a rear sway bar. Looks like I have a good set of records. It has new glows and injectors. Probably seems likely the injectors were not needed. It will also need some tires. two out of six are already new.

I will need to sell a couple or so other vehicles to cover the cost.

The controls are all very familiar. Driving it feels like driving a large 300d with a small house stuck on top of it....oh wait....that is what it is.

Winnebago has a large dealer network which means you can get service for them about anywhere you happen to be. Some people buy other brands of large class A PRICEY motorhomes only to find a non-existent dealer network.

Seems there is a big market for the upgrades. https://sprinterupgrades.com/products/sprinter-suspension-upgrade-package-a-for-3500-van-or-cab-chassis

Yeah. There are a lot of sprinters out there and all of them are tall. The rv conversion is the tallest. I ordered shocks, a bigger sway bar and some booster spring devices last night.
