California Fuel Prices

The state of California state legislature is attempting to pass legislation which would provide a $500 debit card to residents of California for each vehicle registered. This is being done in an effort to help ease the high prices of fuel in California which in some areas has gone beyond $7.00 per gallon.

Politicians love handing out free ****.

I hope they grandfathered it in to cars registered yesterday or earlier.

Meanwhile, Top Tier Gas in Bubbaville is $4.199/gallon.

The revenues from SB 1, which added 12 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline, thereby creating the highest gasoline tax regime in the country, and 20 cents to a gallon of diesel fuel, leaving the state with the highest diesel taxes in America. These funds should be spent to improve California’s rotten automobile infrastructure, not pirated for political uses.
that 20˘ is 'cause nEWSOM & his bolshevik buddys in Sacremento hate people who drive diesel vehicles and want to put an end to diesel in Kalifornia

A higher tax on diesel fuel as compared to gasoline isn't uncommon, is it? The higher tax on diesel fuel is consistent with the federal tax regime, enacted by then-president Reagan in 1984 (still not a Bolshevik, right?), which imposes a higher tax on diesel to account for the weight of commercial vehicles and the damage caused to infrastructure by those vehicles. And many other states do the same...

I thought big rigs already paid an excise tax to fund road wear.

Large trucks on the highway probably burn around fifteen American gallons an hour. Going to increase shipping costs for certain. Of course this will get passed along.

I bought my 1st diesel car (new '79 Rabbit) in 1979.
Kalif/DMV (one of 'em) charged me a $500 "fee" because there was no state smog test for diesel vehicles in Kal. Seriously.

Where I live/buy fuel, 'SoKal', diesel has always been cheaper than gasoline. Only in the last few years has deez cost more than gas, and not all the time either.

Gas is higher in California because of the Rocky Mts. There are no pipelines running form the west to the east.

There is a line running from Houston that ends in California that goes through Arizona. Most of the product delivered to this line is for the AZ market as well as New Mexico.

All the gasoline out there is refined out there. Mostly in south LA or Long Beach.

But the diesel thing.... California has long wanted older diesel trucks to move to another state due to how badly they pollute. So if you don't have a new truck with the latest pollution equipment on it they try to hit you with a built in 'fine'.

I'm not sure what the solution is. But gas has been higher there than Texas and Oklahoma for about fifty years.

Speaking as someone who was almost stranded in the Yukon, -52* the DEF tank froze, got the dreaded "You have 10 starts remaining" message. Nearest Sprinter service is either Anchorage or Edmonton, 1,000 miles either way.
I understand why professional drivers prefer non-computerized engines, change the oil and filters regularly and they're good for 500k miles.

Here in the un-pollution controlled portion or Oregon, the older, louder and stinkier your diesel truck is the better. Diesel is about .20c more than reg here.

You drove the AlCan in winter?

I’m impressed.

I've driven the AlCan 15 times since 1990, 10 times in the winter.
Prefer driving it in the winter.
1) no mosquitos
2) no motorhomes ("look an eagle, moose, bear" as they slow down to walking speed)
3) no dust
4) potholes are packed with snow and bladed smooth
As long as you have good tires, battery, driving lights, and a block heater it's just a long drive.

Our Sprinter has a really good trip meter, reset it at the "Y" in Soldotna.
