I think I will take it to a welding shop and have them cut out the ID with a plasma cutter. It does not have to be precise as long as the ID is large enough to fit on the hub as I am going to cut the old gear off and weld the new one on. I hate to spend money on a $9 gear.

Thumbs up Adapting & Improving

Yeah but ;

Think of the bragging rights you'll have ! .

I was out and about today watching many people, adults and kids, riding their electric bicycles ~ I think it's time for Mo-Peds to make a come back like they did in the 1970's gas price crisis .

After another gear failure I am abandoning the chain concept. The larger chain is too bulky and there is little room at the small gear. I have redesigned the drive to use a belt. Should have all the parts by Friday. Instead of a belt I am using a "Power twist V-belt". It's a cool concept and highly versatile. I will get some pics when I get it done.

Parts are trickling in. I am adding turn signals and waiting for the belt. I don't think the Power twist belt will work for this application. Should be done this weekend. It's going to look like a Tiajuana taxicab by time it's done.

My wife keeps bugging me to go junking at the transfer station. A lot of the stuff looks like someone's garage was cleaned out and hauled away as it's in pickup truck/trailer sized piles of related stuff. Lots of good, usable stuff there. Maybe another moped

Thumbs up Trash & Treasures

I'm amazed your wife approves .

I'm also surprised they allow rummaging .

I have found many good things over the years in other's discards .

Even a newly new Honda CT90- Motocycle once when the cleaned out an old man's garage after death .

Scads of old yet immaculately maintained power equipments too, a that vanished P.D.Q. ~ I think I was the first person by, they'd tossed the Motocycle in a dempster dumpster and I happened to see the taillight poking up....

I still have that bike in my back yard .

I only discovered it a short time ago and a few trips. My wife is the one that is urging me to go as she collects stuff to make metal art although I am the one that cuts, grinds and welds. Pretty lean pickins today-mostly stuff for the wife-all heavy and bulky. I did find a working KitchenAid mixer-I can always use another.

Coming soon...Crusty rider V2.0

I have decided to take Crusty rider into the 21st century and electrify it. I wish I had come to this decision before getting the engine running and re gearing it but it was classic project creep. Even with the lower gearing it just doesn't cut it. I'm going to put a gear reduction motor where the engine was and I can delete the intermediate reduction belt/pulleys and drive directly to the wheel. Since the original engine was not really visible it won't look much different but will be quiet, less stinky and easier to ride. I could have bought a new one by time I get it done but this one will be unique

I decided to use a hub motor instead of the chain drive motor. Heavier and more expensive but simpler and easier install. Took some research on what wheel to use. A 20" bike tire is the same diameter as a 17" moped tire (different sizing standard) and there is a 1200W version. It will fit without the cassette installed. I may lace up the motor to my wheel eventually so the front and back are the same but the hub has 36 holes and the wheel has 24 holes. I can buy a new 36 hole 17" wheel. Mine is pretty rusty so I might do that. Look out project creep!

Ordered the motor and new bare 17" wheel. I decided to do it right and use a moped wheel. Also if I buy the bare motor I can buy the motor of my choice. I went with the Nine Continent FH212 which is a 1200w max brushless direct drive motor. Once I ensure the motor/wheel fit I will order the controller/battery. The spokes are going to be very short but it's done all the time. I can always transfer the setup (with a different wheel) to another conveyance if I decide later.

Parts are trickling in. So far I have the motor and wheel-waiting for the spokes so I can build the wheel. I am using a front wheel motor so it will fit centered in the frame and not offset. Don't need the gear cassette. I think the battery and controller will fit under the seat if I modify the seat support. Eventually I want to cut off the center stand to use a kick stand and modify the frame to remove the extra braces, chain guard/floor board supports used for the mopedy stuff and add a top bar to the frame to make it strong. I will need to go shopping with a saws-all at the transfer station.
New wheel is wider than the skinny original wheel, has 36 holes to match the motor and I can use a larger tire like a 2.75 or 3.00.
