I think the moped is going to need a new carb-not sure if it's worth it. It sat for many years with gas in it. It's got crusty, white residue. I tried to clean the carb and it's not getting fuel and the white stuff was impossible to remove.
A friend left a bunch of junk in my garage. She is famous for finding free stuff in front of houses. I pulled out one of them - a weed whacker, plugged it in and black smoke poured out of it.
I arranged for a bulky pickup for a pile of stuff like mattresses, etc and left the weed whacker on top.
I thought I better put a sign on it that it didn’t work so I went inside for a marker and some paper. It only took 2 minutes.
The weed whacker was already gone.

I wonder how many times it has transferred ownership and when it will finally get thrown away.

Maybe I will find the weed wacker here.
Took the (I don't know what to call it at this point) out for the longest ride yet-only about 5 min since it again was getting dark, cold and I did not have the mirrors on it. A few issues with things rubbing-mostly the motorcycle sized rear tire. A little massaging of the fender should fix it. Went up the hill nicely that I had to walk it up before. The top speed is about the same but it gets there alot faster. I am pleased with the power it has. Looking forward to a longer ride. Disc brakes working nicely. Once I get it a little more done I will get some pics.

I installed a kick stand today-lots of cutting, grinding and welding but happy with the result. It's pretty much done now but I have not been able to ride it due to the weather. The few times I rode it I was happy with the result. I still have some tweeking on the controller settings once I can get out and ride it. I am going to see if I can set up regen braking to use the motor as a brake once I get everything sorted out.

Went for the longest ride today-to the "other" grocery store in town that is about 1.5mi and down up a small hill. Really pleased how it quickly moves away from a standstill. It accelerates pretty quickly to about 25 but will go faster. There are still some tweeks I may make to the controller to enhance the performance. I want to put my Garmin on it to see how fast it actually goes. I got a few looks from people and one commented on how it was quiet. I think when people see an old moped the expect noise and smoke. Weather was cold-like 38. I will get some pics when conditions are better.
I think the HP is about the same as the gas engine but the motor produces it over a wide speed range instead of just at high RPM like the gas engine.

Sorry I have not been able to get pictures as I have been sneaking out between rain storms. I have made 5 trips into town (on one charge) which involves going up and down 2 hills and a lot of full throttle starts. Battery at 50 volts with 48v being my lower limit at 30% charge. I have read it can shorten the battery life if one leaves it fully charged alot so I don't want to charge it every time I ride it. I'm adding a voltmeter so I can monitor it on the road. I'm also adding a beeper to the turn signal as I keep forgetting to turn it off. Several people have approached me with interest as they notice it's electric and want to know about it. Overall it has surpassed my expectations. It accelerates quickly and is quite so I can hear traffic. It's a bit heavy to park and move around. I think it gained some weight.
I'm also designing a quick release of some kind so I can easily remove the baskets since they can get it the way when I'm putting away.

Thumbs up More progress !

Sounds good to me .

I hope you're not getting flooded like mid and Northern Cal. are !~ the Tulare basin is full again, sounds great but for the many people who now live and farm there .

The controller failed resulting in a several month downtime of troubleshooting via email, returning the unit to BC Canada for analysis, and having a replacement (upgraded) unit shipped. I takes about 2 weeks for packages coming/going due to customs, etc. I noticed there was an arc and pop when plugging in the battery and that is when the controller ceased to function. The arc is caps charging but arcs cause "ringing" which is a high frequency oscillation and not good for delicate electronics. The unit is highly engineered so I am surprised this was an issue. On the battery disconnect switch I added a "charging switch" that connects the battery through a 150 ohm resistor to slowly charge the caps and eliminate ringing then I turn on the main disconnect. Hopefully this will keep the problem from happening again. Unit is guaranteed for 3 years anyhow.

Post Mixed Thoughts

Bummer it failed, good that you know to add the resistor to protect it, bummer the seller didn't fix this bug before selling, good they stand behind their products .

They are a highly regarded company in the Ebike world. The controller is good for 60v and a fully charged 52v battery is about 58.5v. Maybe plugging in a fully charged battery is too much. Anyway my charging resistor is insurance. I think most people just keep the battery plugged in all the time. I can't because the 12v converter for the lights would run down the battery.

It's finally "done" except it still has the transfer station crud on it except for the new parts. The space where the engine was looked empty so I created a faux engine by essentially making it a shell so it lost about 3/4 of its weight. Muffler was big and heavy so I used just the (rusty) chrome exhaust the pipe. Once I get it cleaned up a bit I will get a few pics. I turned up the max current to 35 amps since the battery is 40A. Takes off very nicely but if I go heavy on the acceleration/speed it runs the battery down faster but who cares? I found I can make 4-6 round trips into town on a full charge. Each round trip is up a hill twice. The store is only 1/4mi with no hill so that's nice for a quick trip for some milk.

Wink I'm Beginning To Wonder......

As no pictures = not real in my book .

I don't care about scruffy, dirty, missing parts etc., as a Mechanic I want to see what's being done .

Sorry I have not posted pictures yet Nate-I have not forgot. Seems like I get busier every day. It gets a lot of attention. Most every time I ride it I get a comment. Someone was taking pictures of it when I came out of the store. I turned down the max speed a bit and it seems to extend the range. I have not charged it for 4 weeks.
