Thumbs down Dealer Shenannigans

My great grand daughter took her 2011 Nissan Sentra sedan to the dealer because it failed the annual smog test at 145,000 miles .

They initially told her it needed a new Mass Air Flow Sensor and some lube & mild tune up stuff, this car is only worth about $2,500 in Los Angeles (ice cold AC but minor dings & scratches overall) so they changed tactics and told her it needed a new engine, catalytic converter, transmission and other things all adding up to $20,000.00 .

She knew the car has little value and so didn't want to put any more $ into it,they talked her into a new Sentra at $500 / month .

Be careful with the Nissans with the cvt transmission. If it gets to 200k miles be thankful.

Their cvt transmissions still made by Renault I believe. I might not keep one past the warranty. Especailly if replacement is pricey. They may be getting better for all I know though.

Renault built a brand new factory in France to produce them.

Post CVT Transmissions

I've been hearing many bad things about CVT trannies, I *think* our 2016 Honda Civic has one but I can feel it shift so why the change ? .

Maybe cheaper to build ? .

I wonder if the ever changed the oil in the engine, the dealer claims sludge on the dipstick .

This is all new territory for me, I hope I can keep my old 240D and 2001 Ford Ranger going a long time yet .

Honda has been improving theirs over time. Toyota has quite a unique concept. They start out in a gear and transfer over to the steel belt drive.

Most strain on a CVT system is when starting to develop momentum. Many are slow to do this. Manufactures by and large are staying with the CVT transmissions. To my generation it makes little differance if a car has a manual or automatic transmission. Might if I lived in a large city.

It is not practical to rebuild many automatic transmissions today. Making for a huge cost when they break. One of ours is a dual clutch type.

I slide the selector into neutral if sitting at a traffiic light. As the clutches build up heat and wear with the car stationary otherwise.

I do not consume the hype with CVT type transmissions. My suspicion without really knowing is they are cheaper to manufacture. So would be attractive to manufacturers.

Oil holes that control the variable valve timing are small. Sludge is not a good thing as a result. Never a good thing in reality. Just worse with the variable valve timing feature.

THANK YOU ! .

In normal automatic boxes the clutches are fully engaged unless they're shifting gears .

The burned ATF is because of lazy drivers cooking it by using the accelerator to hold still on hills / slopes, not from any internal slippage .

Many old timers will tell you that old bad ATF is the only thing keeping the tranny going and if you change it and the filter the slush box will quickly fail .

Untrue to the extreme .
