Shock waves off of a F35c

That is pretty cool. Perfect timing on the picture.

I have some familiarity with fighter jets in the mountains of Washington state. I think it was in the late 80s I was driving over Stevens Pass, I was pretty close to the summit and all of a sudden I heard what sounded like a semi coming at me sideways with its tires locked up. Just a horrific screeching came out of nowhere.

I was whipping my head around so hard to see what was going on I pulled a muscle in my neck a little bit. Then I saw what it was, a fighter passed overhead from behind, did some barrel rolls, not far above the pass ahead of me, and was gone.

I knew there was a place called the Mach Loop in the UK. I did not know about this place called Sidewinder in CA. Im going to have to look into this for the next time I go out there. Not sure if civilian access is allowed.

Saw the same thing.

Was years ago. in my Westfalia camper in the middle of nowhere near Death Valley.

Stopped for lunch.

No other vehicles in either direction.

Dead silent.

And then screaming loud.

Fighter jet was close enough that I saw the pilot.

I saw him as a still frame.

And then he was gone.

I don’t know how fast he was going.

I lived in Fort Worth during the 50s. Back then it was not illegal for aircraft in the US to go supersonic. Sonic booms were a common thing since Carswell AFB was right there and the B-58s stationed there had to practice somewhere. So they usually blew past Fort Worth and created a boom every few days.

They would rattle the windows every time.

Post Sonic Booms

Yes ~ I remember in the late 1950's hearing sonic booms on a regular basis, we kids were told : "that's the sound of PROGRESS ! " .

Had the fortune to be allowed to take a seat in the cockpit of a F35. The interesting part is that there isn't much to see, the entire plane is controlled with the helmet. Next to the F35 was a F-22 Raptor parked, they were more protective and secretive over that plane, while the F35 was just delivered.

Wow, cool picture.

It is amazing how fast they fly. The Blue Angels come to Seattle for a summer festival every year (before COVID) and they would practice near where I worked. It was kind of scary to watch.
