Need an answer...
I sold my truck and just put my '90 jetta diesel on the road.I would like to know if pulling a small utility trailer will be to much for my car.I just put a brand new clutch in it and it is working great! But I would still like to be able to go to home depot, camping an bike riding with my family and the like. The owners manual says the car was intended for passengers only but gives specifications and max weights for towing a trailer.
The car now has 110k on it.The previous owner pulled a single axle car carrier with it.That's why I had to put a clutch in it.It has a hitch and wiring for a trailer.Anyone have a setup like this on a smaller car?Should I just buy another truck?I don't want to pay insurance on a 3rd vehicle and I am NOT putting a hitch on my BENZ!Although I could probably tow a 5000lb boat with it.Any advice guys? |

not a problem
This size car is used for towing all the time in Europe. I have a friend with a '99 Jetta TDI that he uses to tow a small box trailer all over the place. Hasn't given him a problem in three years. That's in the US BTW
I have another friend in the UK with the exact same car as me (96 Passat TDI) that he used to pull a 10' twin axle utility trailer all the time as well. Mind you, that one has electronic brakes. |

You are right...
...these "small" cars tow trailers all over Europe.
I thinkt the trailers for the Jetta are in the 700 - 1000 kg range for trailers with brakes, trailers without break probably about 500 kg. You should have a problem with towing stuff around behind a Jetta. The even handle bigger camper-trailers. Kind regards Eberhard |
