Argh

Well I'm about to cry think.

One of my hard drives in my raid setup crashed last night while i was sleeping. Know what that means? All data GONE!!!!.

I haven't even had a chance to see if I can resurrect it, but you can bet I'm going to see what I can do.

Damn i hate it when a hard disk actually has a hardware failure.

I was getting prepped to backup everything and reformat, and then the drive actually failed.

I'm upset now, but I'll get over it.

Biggest thing I am pissed about is losing all my e-mail. I could care less about anything else...

Alon

The hard drive just failed on my Dell laptop that I use for work.

We are sending it out to a data recovery firm to see what they can salvage.

Estimate was $400, but of course the company is paying.

BUMMER! Aww I feel for you Alon. Lucky me... I just backed up 600 MB's (my personal folder "Dave's File Folder") onto a CD-RW. First time I've stored data on a CD. My computer has been very bltchy lately.

! Good luck Alon...

I have my docs and pics and stuff backed up. But my e-mail is important. I just lost a ton of e-mails. alot of them I needed too.

Thats the worst part. my data I can replace, my music and vids I can replace. My programs I can replace, but I can't replace all the e-mail. All I want to do is be able to get enough access to extract my e-mail. then I dont care about the rest.

I was thinking the same thing, even if it was striped, shouldn't there be enough there to rebuild the data you lost?

hehe yeah Mine was raid 0 I believe. no parity or mirroring, just straight speed setup.

Like I said its not a huge ordeal for me, unless I lost all the e-mail...

see, you learn something new everyday. I was always under the impression that Raid 0 had some redundancy involved. I think I may have been thinking of Raid 0+1.

well I have 140gb of space. not concerned with it. System is up and running. I guess it was justa fluke, but I will be backing up everything and reformatting the system and disabling the raid configuration.

I did backup my e-mail just a sec ago, and I backed up my docs and other stuff the other day. so all I need to do is go through the other stuff ont he drive to make sur eI didn't forget anything. WHEW!!!!

A NOTE TO EVERYONE. BACKUP YOUR DATA OFTEN!!!

Just curious but were your drives IDE or SCSI? I know SCSI are kown for their higher reliabilty as well as higher cost.

IDE.

SCSI and me have a bad history of unreliability.

I have had every SCSI Drive I ever owned fail on me within 6 months, and get massive amounts of bad sectors.

So I stay away. IDE is plenty reliable, and nowadays, plenty fast.

SCSI is of course still faster, but thats the only advantage it has nowadays.
