feast for car lover's eyes

well , took the tribe out to the east end , thru the hamptons, and for those of you who might do same , you know its a tough time plodding along 27 East on a summer saturday , but one thing helps make up for it , and that is getting a good look at a LOT of great cars! those hollywood jackasses out there like their cars fan-cee!

some sightings

in bridgehampton - not one , but 2 ferraris in diner parking lot...then as i stopped for slice of local pizza, 2 more (red cabs both , looked like 355s?) bam , boom ! pass me by in quick order , after that a new maserati coupe , (are they out yet??) followed by my personal fave of the day, espresso clk cab.

saw several euro-looking sl's from 80's all thru trip , a few with surfboards propped up in back , and if anyone's wondering whose buying that new bmw 7 , i know where you can find a bunch of those things (they're almost not so horrible in person). speaking of bimmers , more X5's than i ever saw in one place...at one point , out further east during week , 4 out of 5 in a row...i think even the landscapers drive them there

...another cool sighting was orig looking real nice jag e-type tailed by what looked like a guards red porsche speedster (i think...hard boot cover in body-color , right?) 911's galore actually... oh well , just thought i'd share my enthusiasm , cause the wife just told me to shut up and keep my eyes on the road.

All reminds me of the Cartier International Polo Match in England recently. Lots of naff people there drinking Pimms, champagne, and generally not knowing what to do with the money they seem to have a) inherited or b) married into. (certainly they often don't appear interested in the *actual* polo - that's why I went, incidentally).

Anyway, lots of X5's, new 911's, anything new, in fact. Everyone eager to put there money into newer cars rather than better cars (unless they can afford both). Not one 500E, 16v, or '80s BMW M3s spotted though, in 1000s of 'flash', new parked cars.

later

I was out at Montaulk 2 weekends ago. I have some great pictures of the lighthouse out there. But I have to agree the cars out there are incredible. A lot of Mercedes, mainly W210's. I did see 2 500E's. One was a silver E500 with EVO wheels, absolutely mint, in east Hamptons. Right behind it was parked a W126 with old style AMG monoblocks, also mint. I came this close to stopping just to drool, but New Yorkers are pretty protective of their cars
What was really amazing was the number of absolutely mint old cars out there. Well maintained ragtop mercedes, porches and jags from a by-gone era. Made me drool all the way there and back A worthy drive on a nice day if you are a car enthusiast for sure!

pento , i did see a bunch of e30 converts still cooking , and a good amount of 560SECs , i NEVER see 500e's on road around here , but seems like a few 16v's still around

and yal , you make good observations too , lots of nice old cabs of every make and lots of w210s , i agree..

w126, saw several lambos and the *incredible* 360 spyder parked , top down, on street , in south beach one weekend last winter.

thanks!

Nope! A few of the more initiated sometimes have E320 CDi's (W210). That's about all you'll see! 240Ds, and old diesels in general are not common in England, but new ones are. Seems the opposite to America.
