Does anyone own a W116 280SE???

Im looking into a 1980 280SE with low miles, is this car reliable, is it underpowered? I drive a 1983 300D now, im sure its about the same in terms of power!
Is there anything i should look for with this car, troublespots? Were the 280SE's exported? It has american style bumpers and headlights, just curious. Thanks anyone!

My father's first MB was a 1980 w116. He had (among many others at the time) horrible electrical issues. I suppose a fix was found within the last 20 years. Bill, to my understading, I thought a 300SD of the same vintage would actually beat a 280SE in a drag race? Correct me if I'm wrong... Nonetheless, 280s are much rarer now a days.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 280SE is supposed to have 185 hp (in Europe, maybe less in the US) and the 300SD 115hp.
So this not I'dont belive you Bill but how a 300SD can beat a 280SE which is 70hp more powerfull.

Interesting ! Thanks Bill.

By the way, I've found a 300SD W116 in France for sale (very rare since none S-class was powered by a diesel engine before the W140) but the price is completely crazy (around 17000$).

The US bumper are there because it's an imported model (from the US probably).
About the headlight, they are yellow but though they seem to have the US shape (round) contrary to the Euro shape (square).

US spec taillights too.

I'll bet no one in Europe can figure out the ACC or why anyone would want it.

The US spec 280SE is a joke compared to the European version.

gnolo:
One quick question
What do you mean no diesel was made other than the w116 before the w140?
The majority of w126s I see are all 300sd
Just wondering what you ment

I think gnolo means that S-class Diesels were a North America thing. The W116 SD for sure was only sold in North America. I thought the W126 SDs and SDLs were also sold in Europe but I've never seen anyone outside the US and Canada post about their W126 S-class Diesel.
