S-video or Component

1. Just brought a new Samsung Projection TV it has both S-video or Component and of course the old composite video input.

2. My DVD also has all of the above mention outputs.

3. The owners’ manual doesn’t say what is the best option to go with, just how to hook the different setups and how to use them.

4. My question is what is the best for DVD to Projection TV S-video or Component?

My 3-month old Toshiba HDTV also has both connections. When my house was being built, I had S-video and RGB component cabling routed throughout the media room, but the home theater experts I consulted say go the RGB route.

My X-Box and GameCube have accessory cables that support component video, but not S-video.

And yeah, coax is the lowest performer in terms of picture quality.

Though each RGB connector is RCA, the actual cable runs in my setup is coax, due to its superior shielding and low loss properties.

I have long wiring lengths among the different locations of each set of equipment, from the TV, the console near the couch where the ancillary gear resides, and the A/V rack. The subwoofer is also located away from the rest of the gear, and it too, has a coax feed...

Yes, Component RGB is best. S-video is pretty good though, and the simple single-RCA type cable (composite)

All, of course, only true for video, coax is excellent for audio, though digital is arguably better depending on which DAC you would rather use. I connected my computer via digital coaxial cable to my Yamaha Dolby Digital 6.1 amp, and the improvement was very noticeable from an analog connection, highlighting the poor DAC in a computer sound card.

but I digress...

Digital is truly the best, but doggone it, no matter what you purchase in anticipation of taking full advantage of the technology, it CHANGES!!!

My media room is wired for 5.1-channel surround (constructed in 1997), and the newest recievers boast 7.1 channel support!! Who knew!!??

You get Dolby Digital, out comes DTS...you get DTS, then it's THX!!!

I read that one of the vendors in a CEDIA show demo'ed a 10.1-channel system!!!

Maybe I should have had the media room built with false panels all around, so I could upgrade every time someone in the Audio Video Standards Consortium farts!!!

RGB DB15?

1. When youall say “RGB” what do you mean?

2. It’s just that the TV has a PC input too I don’t want to confuse it with this.

Red, Green, and Blue

RGB cable is multi-coax cable used for component video. Each coax carries a part of the video signal. Coaxes are identified as Red, Green, and Blue, signifying the part of the signal they carry.

Component is best...

...but don't forget the cables. It is amazing to see how many people hook up expensive audio and video components to cheap cables

It is like buying a high performance car and then putting the cheapest, smallest tires you can find...it just doesn't work.

30 years of television broadcast experience says to go with the component, rgb inputs, and use good quality cables. Enjoy.

Component = RGB = 3 Seperate cables (usually joined together though), each for Red, Green, and Blue

*Unless* you use a SCART Lead, (with the big rectangular 21(?) pin connector). If your equipment allows it, this can be used to deliver composite video (normal), or S-Video, or RGB output, without the need to buy a special RGB or S-Video lead.

As a side note, using RGB defeats Hollywood's 'Macrovision' copy-protection sytem... so you can copy DVDs, VHS tapes etc. without hinderance!

SCART

Pentoman,

1. Oh I forgot to mention because I don’t think I was going to use it but the projection TV is a multi system so yes it does have a SCART input also, is this even better than component RGB inputs, with the 21 pin = more signal separation?

2. My DVD however does not have SCART output just the composite video, S-Video and component video.

3. I have seen a SCART cable with something different on the other end, it looks like some of the wiring harness on our Mercedes.

Is it true that Mercedes and Harman Kardon have compiled and created a THX certified sound system that is in the Maybach and will replace the impotent Bose sytem in the S-class?

And isnt BMW and Harman Kardons Logic 7 a reinterpretation of Bose 7.1, except in a car?

It depends on what you call expensive? Both Denon and Onkyo make upgradable receivers. They only run about $3500 or so. That is not expensive to me. I own a Denon 5800 and I am going to upgrade (whenver I get aorund to it). The upgrade will allow me to have Dolby Pro 2 (don't really care about that) & THX Ultra 2 Certification (oh yeah baby!!).
