The Volkwagen Phaeton is better than the W220

Yes

It is better built, with greater attention to detail, better materials used and more effective equipment.

They have beat MB at what they previously did best.

HELL YES

I havent taken a good look at the "new" W220, but I have taken a good look at the Phaeton, and let me tell you.... It is an utter shame, but i would actually terminate a lease EARLY on a W220 (if I had one), for a Phaeton. Not only would i get to be the first on my block with one, but the car is a techno marvel. Have you seen the AC system? Or what about a HUGE sunroof with 10 presets for opening, and 4 for sliding? Do I need to go into the W12? Or even the attractive styling? And, the one thing that gets me, is its build quality makes a Lexus LS430 look like a Hyundai. Mercedes is BEAT. The only problem is, VW will not sell many premium-luxury vehicles for at least 5 years, to see how there durability is!

Cool

I looked around but couldn't find a great site that showed this car. Do you have a link?

I guess I'll look on ebay.

I agree its a great car but really there is hardly any comparison in class with the 220. I read somewhere that the Phaeton was an experimental class of its own and that there won't be another in the line.

Yes. The quality seems undoubtedly better. Hell, even a Lexus LS430 is less plasticky and has better interior build quality than the W220.

Wait a few years and see what breaks/malfunctions/just plane doesn't work or isn't properly thought out, then judge how good the car is.

I have to say that VW has some of the best designers out there, they certainly make some attractive cars. Regardless, I would never buy one of these due to past experience and poor treatment by the factory.

One thing that does bother me quite a bit is.......doesn't VW own Audi, seems to me that they are beating Audi at it's own game. Why buy an Audi when you can buy a VW that offers a whole lot more for less money! I don't understand why VW doesn't spend more of their time trying to build entry level cars that are not only beautiful to look at but also reliable. I guess time will tell how this pans out.

VW is the parent company to Audi and Porsche. The Phaeton probably is the same platform as the A8 as the A4 and Passat and TT and A3 both share platforms. I interior looks much like the last generation A8. I'm sure if you could tear apart the car you'd find many shared components.

It will probably be another car that'll be cheap to by in about 5-7 years - when the REAL problems start! And no doubt many enthusiasts will be spending lots of time online in "Phaeton" forums trying to sort them out.

Yeah I can see it now...."Plesase help!! My speed sensitive wind deflector only works when all four positons for the climate control are at the same temp settings!! Also I tested my 24 watt solar panel and am only getting 17 watts on a bright day. Could this be the reason the inside temperature only lowers 12 degrees when sitting at traffic lights??"

Back to school techs!!:p

I bet that a W-12 will have to have its engine pulled just to get at the water pump or the oil filter. The Phaeton engine compartment just doesn't look too easy to work on, inside.

I think of this car as a more modern version of the 1990 Infiniti Q45. Sure, it looked great and all-conquering when it was new, but then, 5 years down the road.....

As far as I read the previews.... Phaeton seems to be much better build, better quipped, and better priced, too!! But then again, it has VW badge, not MB.... :p :p

Anyone who is still hung up on the VW badge on the Phaeton is unintelligent. People who buy a car just for the badge are posers.

This VW is the real deal. It is the product of the genius Dr. Peich.

Daimler Benz will have to do better than what they have now.

The current generation Audi A8 embarrases the W220 in build quality as well.

Anyone who disagrees is lying to themselves and people they talk to.
