Great weekend...

Dad and I took off to the Columbia Icefields for the weekend, and climbed a mountain.

Snow, cold, rain, sun, and high altitude. Of course, we got there in a Mercedes!!

Great shots! The biggest mountain I've climbed several times is called Old Rag, in Virginia. It's what you would see up there as a foothill.

I've got a few Nikons. Two of them are over twenty years old and take pictures just as good as the new computerized cameras. Whoever said lighter is better sure got it wrong. Their metal housings are what have helped them last so many years. They'll never break.

Great shots! Magazine quality even! Looks like you had a great time up there. I need to get myself a real camera one of these days.

Thanks for the comments guys!

The Columbia Icefields is about 100 kilometers from the Jasper townsite via one of the most scenic highways on the planet. We parked and then hiked the 5 kilometers up to Wilcox Pass. It's fairly steep to the Pass, but not too bad. You pass through the treeline and come to a terrific alpine meadow.

Since it's September, there is usually snow. The pass is at about 8000'. From there, it's either down, or UP, and I mean UP. It's cold (about -5C with a HOWLING wind, meaning a windchill of REALLY cold).

We climbed the rocks to the ridge, where I took the third pic. By this time, we'd be in the dark coming down if we went further, so we headed back.

We overnighted at the Columbia Icefields Campground.

Sunday we came home, batteries completely recharged.

Ahh yes nothing like some fresh Mountain air to clear the mind (and lungs)!

Great Pics John! I love my Cascades, but on scale and overall granduer, your Candain Rockies have few equals in the world. Having grown up hiking/backpacking/moutaineering/climbing in the Cascades, I've always had dreams of the great icefalls and rock routes of Alberta/British Columbia. Funny how working full-time, being married, and maintaing my MB's cuts into that adventure time.

Thanks for the quick vacation

I'm planning a short weekend trip in the enxt week or two myself to see some fall colors before the the snow starts piling up and I'll need snowshoes. But I'll be taking my new 3.2 mega-pixel Canon

Regards,
- Ryan

Test

Great Pix! I was playing with Photoshop Elements and wanted to see how something would look. Since the thread is weekend/mtns, thought I'd show a pix of our local mtn in a view from one of my bike rides this weekend. The pix was taken with a Sony Cyber-shot 3.3 mega pixel.

John, I have a Spotmatic too! Dating from ’72. Shot miles of film but stopped using it as soon as we got the Sony

Here’s the pix:

Stephan,

Actually no, the terrain is a pretty easy uphill trek that follows the Carbon river, which, btw, is glacier fed The road turns to gravel about 7 miles up (about 2 miles from where the pix above is taken). I use a heart rate monitor to make sure my heart is under 150 bpm. Here is another, taken on the way back down:

Never thought of this before...

Georgia's highest peak is 4784 ft. I have been to around 5500ft in North Carolina. My ears "pop" when I get above 3500 ft which is about the elevation of our north Ga. cabin on Cherry Log Mountain. Do your ears continue to pop as you go higher or is that a one time deal?

I've been up to 12k ft. on Mt. Rainier as well as summited Mt Hood (11k ft) in Summer and Winter, and Mt. Baker (10k ft.), and one's ears (at least mine) will pop based on how fast you ascend/descend. Something to do with the continuially increasing/decreasing air pressure as elev. is gained/lost.

While climbing, you don't usually move up in elevation fast enough but while coming down is generally a much faster affair which leads to continual popping. Of course, above 10,000 feet, with a heavy packm your entire head can feel like it's popping!

Regards,
- Ryan

Beautiful area, love the photos. I rode a cycling tour in Alberta in summer 2000. We began at Banff, rode to Radium Hot Springs, then up to Golden, over Kicking Horse pass to Lake Louise. Then followed the Ice Fields Parkway up to Jasper. It's an absolutely spectacular place, and very different from the American Rockies. The U.S is very developed, but the Canadian Rockies are quite remote and unspoiled. I think there's only one gas station along a 100 mile stretch of the Ice Fields Pkwy. (Not that it mattered on my bicycle...)

All these pics remind me of all the time I spent in the Sierras. How I wish I could drop everything and do it again. You guys are so lucky to have the mountains so close.
