Are you digital yet?

After a year of research I think I am ready to fork over the cabbage for a digital camera. I usually just get the throw away 35mm cardboard model, take pics and toss it in the trash. "Oh Man" I was suppost to get them developed!

My computer is an old AMD600 W/64 megs of sd ram.

My choice of camera is Canon S30, and I will get the 128mb card, spare batt, and USB card reader.

This camera has been on the market for one year and has very high ratings, but I question my computer speed etc. I am well versed on Corell Photo Shop, and the Canon package looks good too.

Buy it?, or wait till the "Girl" kills me for doing any more more research?

Please Help!

Get more memory for your computer first. Once you get into editing the photos you will eat up your memory I have 640mb in right now and when I work with photos I slow down a great deal. They Cannons are nice but there are some nice Sony Mavicas out there too. We have a Olympuis at with a great optical zoom and it's 2.1 mega as well.
Go for it

Ditto Dan's comment on the RAM. SDRAM is probably the cheapest RAM you can find now (well, next to regular EDO SIMMS, but who buys those these days...). I just ordered a 128MB SDRAM upgrade for a machine and the chip was $22! They even had some cheaper than that (at $19), but I like Micron brand, so I paid the extra $3. What's nice is that most SDRAM will auto-adjust to the bus speed of the motherboard. For example, if you have a motherboard that supports PC66mhz SDRAM, you can buy the standard PC100 SDRAM and it will interface with the motherboard at the correct bus speed.

I have only a 700mhz processor, but I have 256mb of RAM. You wouldn't believe the stuff I run on this thing, and it is handled with ease. Memory is a BIG player in PC performance.

Hope this is helpful.

Take care,
Michael.

Thanks to all for the input, I looked on E Bay and was quite suprised to see how cheap the 128 meg chips are, I have 4 slots to load up. Time flies and after a while and your computer becomes transparent....you are happy with the programs, DSL smokes the net, but I had a feeling my old machine needed a boost to support a digital camera.

I know the new cpu's are fast and cheap, but win98, my programs, etc...... but you know.....Old Dog, New Tricks.

I think the Canon S30 is the one for me because of the small size, and features.

Please teach me more.

Thanks,

A caveat regarding memory

Just to be sure you know, it's a good idea to know the maximum amount of memory that your motherboard can support. Some supply four slots, but it may only be expanable to ... say 512mb. You just want to be careful not to exceed the limit.

My advice would be to purchase 2 128MB chips. You can keep the 64MB chip for a system total of just over 300MB. That would be PLENTY for your needs. Cost? About $40.

Take care,
Michael.
