Formula 1 rule changes

Among the rule changes proposed is to add 1 kg. per point earned in the standings. Yep, penalize teams for doing well. That's just swell :) More restrictions on engines and mandates that engines last for a certain number of races. How about build a better car?

Why do you think we have the technolegey we have today? The F1 platform, along with NASCAR, and used to be CART....scrap them cry babies....always seem to set the pace for new ideas, that's the game and it works, thats why the new cars are respectable today!

I rebember some of the guys that worked on carbs, for F1, now I have dated myself, How old are you?

No disrespect here, just want to relate.

Kuan 10-11-2002 08:10 AM

The technology would exist even without the restrictions. Economic competitiveness and the will to win is what brings out the best in every manmade playground. To create an environment which fosters the development of new ideas is great, but to impose sanctions for doing a good job would just discourage anyone from trying. The racing industry diverts the creative process from doing what is really innovative to small scale problem solving. Instead of looking at an overall template for solving aerodynamic problems they're concerned with routing air through the radiators with the new restrictions in wing design. Sometimes the restrictions need to be there, like the size of a basketball. Sometimes it's just better to let the best guys do their best work.

I'm 34, if that has anything to do with it. I've worked on carbs too.

I thing Bernie E. is making new rules to keep the F1 series competitive.

Viewership and attendance at F1 races have fallen since Ferrari clinched the championship a couple months ago.

If Ferarri were to continue their dominance (unchecked) for the '03, '04, '05 (etc.) seasons, fans would get bored. I'm not saying Bernie is right, just my take on it.

Kuan 10-11-2002 08:31 AM

You can do a better job with a salary cap. Give teams 180 million and see what they can do with it. Share revenues... heh. Oh wait, that would mean driver's strike every three years! But you're right, it needs to be more competitive.

Never happen

1kg / point will not be enacted.

renyf1 10-11-2002 04:34 PM

did u see in Autosport.com the Project lead for BMW's F1 program left on tuesday...guess where he's going?

:-)

He's been heavily involved with all their F1 engines since 99.

Okay getting back to the real posted topic:

-I'd really like more mechanical tech to keep the racing semi close
-wouldn't mind 1 tire manufacturer only
-glad to get rid of the driver "aids"...even the drivers don't like it
-ban qualifiying engines
-limit testing
-like the idea of only having only 2 aerodynamic changes/year..but increase to 4
-maybe standardize some parts
-let teams buy chassis vs everyone making their own
-ban refueling or do what CART does limit the amount of fuel a team gets to use...or say u can only refuel once...same thing for tires unless u have a puncture
-ban bi-directional telemetry....get rid of being able to fix the cars automatically while its on the track...wait..that saved David this year @ Monaco didn't it....okay i'm fine with that technology :-)

-Ren

PS great topic !

One rule I would LOVE to see gone is the restriction on active aerodynamic aids! I think we are beyond unreliable actuators so the safety whinners can put a cork in it. I think active wings on the straights and in the corners would be a cool thing to watch.

I really have a hard time understanding why they keep trying to slow this sport down, isn't it supposed to be the King of Auto Racing? If the answer is safety, show me how many drivers have died in the last ten years.

I Agree 100% Kuan! ;)

To many rules and restrictions already exist, I think the FIA needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of how F1 impacts the rest of the Automotive World, yet every time they change the rules they go ahead and tighten the noose. F1 as a motor sport has the potential to help develop and mature cutting edge technologies, like Fuel Cells for example.

What if the FIA would re-allow multiple engine configurations to exist with the benefit going to the developer? What if we had Fuel Cell powered cars competing, what about hybrid-electric powered cars, or even stricktly electric?

Who would benefit? Would the Sport, would the average consumer? I think so.

Frankly, I am surprised Bernie and Max didn't decide on bicycle size tires for the cars this time around! Ohh..... wait, thats next time.

Ayrton Senna died in the past 10 yrs...enough said :-(

The problem isn't the cars going faster and faster its all the bad things that happen when they leave the track. The human body can take only so much.

Ideally we'd like to go back to the 80s when three teams competed for the win and there was 3-5 top drivers all capable of winning every race. What do u want? Technology or racing. If someone could answer that and make everyone happy, I think Bernie is looking for u :-)

Kuan 10-12-2002 09:01 AM

Senna... :( Michele Alboreto :( I believe they can make the tracks safer. F1 is perhaps the safest of all the big money motorsports already, but I think they can still make it safer. I'd still like to see cars racing down the Hunnadiere's at Le Mans at 240mph!

Kuan

roas 10-12-2002 11:52 AM

Ok, Ok, one person is one too many.:( No disrespect to Michele Alboreto, but he died in a Audi R8 Le Mans Series type car, not a F1 car.

Compared to other series and at the speed we are seeing I would say F1 is at a decentl level of safety, all I am saying is now it's time to up the performance again. Of course safety has to keep pace, thats a given.

My point is that the sport has come a long way from when it first started, hell seat belts......, we don't need those stink'in seatbealts.....

I would say, develop active aig bags, they can charge and discharge suspension components hundreds of times a second, I think they can do the same with a air bag, and it would end up in our Mercedes to boot!

What I want, and what I imagine most stectators want is to see technology so amazing, and cars doing things on the race track so spectacular that you just sit there is disbelief, for the whole race! Is that to much to ask for? I don't know. Is Ferrari spending 100+ million a year to squeeze 1 second out of a car worth much, you tell me? I bet active aero aids would trim a huge amount of development cost and see performance levels go way higher.

I guess I would like innovation to come back, excitement as well. I think the sport is ready (the spectators) for a revolution in the technology, not a evolution, we have had the same old performance as 20 years ago. The 80's turbo cars where amazing, 1200+ hp from 4 cylinder engines and they still hold some track records (at least I think they do???). (What would the ricers do if they could bring that level to the street from a 4 cylinder??? )

I wouldn't be against the major manufactorer's breaking away and creating their own series and writing the rules as they like. If McLaren wants to spend more on engine development why should bernie think no?

You want somethink exciting, let the rule book get fuzzy! If I am a team and the next guy whips my butt should I whine like a baby? No I should go do my homework and try and beat him.

If Mclaren has Beryllium in its engines and is kicking the tar out of everyone else (98, 99), should Ferrari protest behind closed doors and have Beryllium banned in 2000? NO, but that is what seems to have happened and it hurt Illmor (Mercedes) bad as they have been trying to catch up ever since.

I am with Kuan, I would love to see F1 doing even 300+ down the back straights, with electric motors at that!

Oh, and while I am wishing pie in the sky stuff, Bernie, can we please have a full racing slick back like the rest of the planet? Hello....?

Sorry for the whinny speech making guys, I'm just frustrated at the current rules.

I think you got it right. No one was singing the blues when Ferrari did not do well. There is an awful lot of anti-Ferrari types out there, even with the added weight Ferrari will still smoke everybody.

Kuan has the Duck season opened in MN yet?

Our's opened today the Fog and heat made it a big fat loser. I got 1 Wood duck.....The only shot fired. Tonight will be a different story I have a river on my property that has ducks o'plenty.

I think you are right RS, Ferrari is so good at this point they are making everyone else look slow!

What would be a cool stunt for Ferrari to pull off would be to see if they could qualify a 2 seat car for a race (have no earthly idea if that is against the rules?). If the added weight rule takes flight it might be a better way to add weight when they get enough pints. With the money they could raise for the 2nd seat I am sure it would be worth it?

I agree that we agree and I agree with the two seater again I agree.
