Coping with burnout

Burnout is a serious problem in my industry. I'd like to ask my sagely Mercedesshop friends for tips, FAQ's, personal experiences, and methods for coping with burnout. Thanks fellas.

Well, I'm not a psychologist but I would suggest that you make sure you are actually experiencing burnout and that this feeling you think you have, this burnout feeling, about your career doesn't have to do with something else that's going on in your life.

If you are really experiencing burnout you could always change careers or stay in the same industry but explore the industry from a different perspective. For example, if you're a chef at a restaurant maybe you could start a catering business or if you're chef in an French Bistro maybe you could switch to a Thai restaurant. Maybe becoming an executive chef would put a different slant on things or even teaching or writing.

It just makes sense that if this is truly burnout you can't fix the problem. I suggest you take a few months off from work working in another field and see if you feel better.

Also, get a complete medical checkup.

Actually I'm pretty happy. I consult and do private functions so I'm OK. That's how I coped. There are others who aren't like me.

There are a number of things that could contribute to burnout, and it's just as numerous as the career choices themselves...

Actual "burnout" i.e., tired of what you do, period!

Motivation - like what you do, but just don't feel up to doing what you normally do anymore.

Environment - hate the hours, coworkers, working culture etc.

Personal gratification - not where you want to be/though you would be, not feeling any rewards for accomplishments, unsatisfied with monetary compensation etc.

Stress - constant threat of job loss, depressed industry, few or no options for alternatives, etc.

The main thing is to determine what is the focus of the burnout and whether it can be resolved by yourself or help is required.
