computer question - windows

Since getting set up with the dsl connection it seems that quite often when surfing through various websites like www.peachparts.com when I click on a topic under diesel discussion nothing happens. The system seems to actually freeze. If I open Norton crashguard it seems to just open and then nothing happens and somethimes it says that the site is running and to give it more time. I'm thinking I may need some more RAM (I am currently running 256MB of RAM memory Windows 98). I am constantly having to restart the computer. I did not have these issues when I was running through the dial up connection. Are there any settings/configuration change to make this system more stable?
Thanks

256 Mb is plenty. i would suggest doing a system update via Tools / Windows update in IE. since you are now on DSL it shouldn't take that long. i have found that this usually fixes whatever is out of whack with my system plus it will plug any holes / vulnerabilities you may have since you now have an "always on" high speed connection....

Jim, also try emptying your temp internet files manually , then go to IE browser and go to tools-internet options-general-and emty your history and internet files, then use clean sweep to clear out cookies and internet cache.
Sometimes when all this junk is accumulated you get no action. It happened to me and I fixed it yesterday by this method. Courtesy of DSL tech help.p.s. I have always heard that crash guard actually conflicts with other programs such as firewalls etc. and causes crashes.
perhaps it has been improved.
I don't load crash guard, just antivius and cleansweep.

i had more freezes and crashes with crash guard installed and activated

this is probably why they don't have this feature in norton since the last 2 releases

I would get rid of windows 98, it had too many problems, go with windows xp, it is very stable and fast, but copy your email addresses and bookmarks before you swap.

Thanks everyone - I may eventually get rid of '98. I followed the advice in the above post and got rid of crash guard and have not had anymore problems.

Bill,

A 40gb drive shouldn’t take that long to format....
Did you or your sis/bil run the Dell diagnostic disk that came with the computer?

Also Norton crash guard sucks. Period.

Hello, anybody know how to copy URL addressesfrom e-mails in order to paste onto the address bar of the IE5 browser?

Outlook express allowed one to right click the mouse and copy paste. But this does not work with Outlook full verion.
Is it as simple as getting rid of outlook and going back to outlook express or something better?

Glad you are up and running engatwork!!

sounbds to me like a faulty hard dirve, if its running slow like that and corrupting the os/data.

I would try to have dell send you a replacement drive, and see if that makes a difference.

Alon
