I can DEFINITELY see that thaey would total that from the looks of it.
My 1983 240D was recently rear-ended and the same damage, but the bumper was off. $2,267.00 And that was the cheap estimate!

Sorry to hear Alon, hope you heal quick!

Hey Alon -

Crappy luck dude.

As you may remember, the same thing happened to me earlier this year - my beloved 300E got rear-ended hard by a woman talking on a cell phone and not paying attention. From looking at your pics, my car was WAY worse off. It cost over $6000 to repair mine.

I had the work done at a top notch shop and had no expense spared. I got an entire new Mercedes exhaust system out of it, new rear panels and trunk (all Mercedes) and new Euro spec tailights (also Mercedes).

My car looks better than it did before, and after several months of driving - I can't notice a single difference in the car. It drives perfectly. The paint is holding up nicely and looks beautiful (so much so that I'm going to get the front repainted now...)

So...all of this to say that sometimes tragic events have a way of turning out better than you can imagine when you're in the thick of things. I'm sure with your experience and a good shop your baby will turn out better than new! All the best,

Chris

Oh, and on the repair front -

I went into the shop as I was concerned about re-aligning the trunk body correctly, as I stated mine was much worse off than yours. He showed me a new alignment machine they use strictly on Mercedes. It looks like a space-age spider thing. It has these arms and hydraulic pulleys on it and it aligns using lasers. The car sits on top of it, about three feet off the ground. He says that because the Mercedes frames are so strong, you can't align them properly using conventional floor-mount pulley systems. This machine is incredibly strong and my car sat in it, being slowly laser-aligned for two full days. I don't know how much of this is snake-oil gab but as I wasn't paying I didn't care. They also replaced the rear trunk body panel completely (with an original Mercedes part) and welded the new piece onto my existing frame, rather than trying to re-align the old damaged piece.

Hope this helps...

Chris

Insurance

Alon, I am curious. Do you carry extra insurance, i.e. special
policy, for your 300CE? Some folks with modified cars etc. purchase a special package to insure their investment.

Or do you typically carry regular insurance?

Take care.

alon,

man you said it.. you really have been on a bad streak of luck.
hopefully it's worked itself out and on the other side you're now in for an incredibly long streak of good happening !
take care of yourself and then your car.

a very wise man here on this board said to me once,

"Whatever it is, if you really love the car, nothing is going to cost you so much as to get rid of it! "

Sorry to hear. I just got rear ended in the Explorer two months ago- no insurance, no drivers license, no registration. And can you believe it, he wanted to leave because he said I stopped too quickly and therefore it was my fault. Well its all back together, and since I am picky its nearly perfect.
You might remember me, I also have a 300CE, with the first generation AMG chrome wheels. I also asked you where you got your car wash deal. Anyway I also got rear ended in the MB not too bad, had it repaired, a new rear clip, going from the rear side glass to the brake light. Its a real pain to go through, but evenually you get over it and on to another project. You will never forget but you need healing time in order to get on. We all need to keep hearing from you, so keep the messages coming whenever you have time.

When I worked at an import repair shop I learned that there is a great difference in body shops, almost all can do cosmetics well but the real good ones can bring the unit back into perfect factory specs as well as bettering factory paint.......

The place I am having fix it is a top notch place, they only repair mercedes, BMW, Jaguar and landrovers.

They appear to know what they are doing, and have assured me that they can return the car to fully repaired status.

Hi Ashman.

I was really sorry to hear about your car. I had one totaled too, and it's never fun to deal with.

Will say extra prayers for your speedy recovery, and a prayer of thanksgiving for your safety!

Peace, and best wishes.

-Michael.

Ditto

your car needs an archangel.
My '67 MGB had the same problem but I believe because it was small.
It was always getting hit while parked. I had to inspect all around each time I came back before hopping in.
One eve. I got slammed by a it and run who ran a red light. Witnesses helped take the license down and she got nailed.
I had to fight for my MGB, cuz the ins. was going to total it.
I had to prove it's value . both intrinsic and in money spent.
Anyway I got it back but this was around 1983, now insurance co. are tight wads.
Labors of love.

Take care
