The next big trend

Remember that Simpson's episode where Homer grew that lobster? Well, what's to stop us from growing our own seafood? I could easily put a tank in my living room and grow my own trout, walleye, maybe lobster and crab even. Can't be all that hard can it?

I did that once.

Grew my own killer whale in the pasta cooker. (I'd gone off spaghetti.)

Apparently I hadn't thought it through completely, because, well, after a while I had a craving for linguini.

Had to buy another pot.

Note: No animals were harmed in the writing of this post.

We used to catch cray-fish/crawdads down by the stream when I was little and put them in the fish tank. They lived a long time..Different species I guess.

trout and walleye have been cultivated for many years, American lobsters and most crabs are problematic in that cannibalism in stressed population is endemic. Spiny lobster (no claws, much less aggressive in nature), is a very real possibility, Cuba has done much of the baseline research on this specie and work is now being done in the US on the commercial feed/nutrition aspects of culture systems.

Depends mainly on the engineering of the space and the wife's preferences to decor! People successfully cultivate tilapia in 500 gallon garage systems year round as one good example. Many are successful at simultaneously growing plants within the system utilizing the effluent as a fertilizer source. Organic greens and fish on tap!

Production of meaningful food quantities requires close attention to the aquatic environmental factors, without regular monitoring a closed system could quickly fail and you loose all your livestock/product.

Mari culture (marine aquaculture) is a significant lobby and growing all the time, Salmon and shellfish are the most economically important cultivars at this time but most everything is being investigate by the big player like ADM, Ralston Purina and the like.

If you’re interested and want to play around/experiment, these guys have been around a long time, give great service, and share what they know with their customers. They sell a wide range of info and you can jump right in with a complete small system for a couple of grand,+2000

P. S order the free catalog it is chock full of technical info that is very well presented, explanations, conversion factors, industry specs, etc. very desciptive product listings if your a "catalog man" its a couple of hundred pages but with plenty of pictures!

As an aside to this topic, a musician I know of started researching aquaculture some time ago, and this lead to his developing the largest fish farm in the UK. The name of the business is Strathaird Quality Seafoods. Much can be learned about doing it right by following the development of this company

I think there’d be too many rocks on the road to your farm by the freeway, and that even after a jump start, you’d have to roll yer own. Heh, heh, heh.

Well, actually I was thinking of locating it on Rock Island near the Rattlesnake Trail.;) On a serious note, I read an article recently about inland shrimp farming! Wonder who came up with THAT?

When I was littler I would go fishing all the time and got pretty good at it. (loved Nebraskas Lakes) I had an idea to take a blue gill I caught gave it to my dads friend and he put it in his fish tank. 2 months later I had a BLue gill that was big enough for a mass anglers award.:D
