Holy crap!

what an experience.

This is how it all started. Its raining.. pretty well I may add. I am listening to the radio and they announce that all around Columbus the traffic is bad. As I approach closer to Downtown.. the traffic starts to back up. Suddenly a navy colored CRV stops. I come up behind and stop behind it as well. As I am at a full stop behind the CRV... I look at my rear view mirror and notice a green Ford Taurus wagon. There is water being splashed all over due to the rain and the wagon was going at a speed that I wouldn't consider safe. As it was getting closer, I noticed her speed was still fast. Then she got right behind me and I noticed her trying to brake but I believe she hydorplaned and she was swirving left and right and I can see the lady panicking . I got scared.. afraid that if she would hit me and cause any damage.. my perfect 300sel would be totalled. So I quickly stomp on the gas and move slightly over to a different lane. If I wouldn't have done that.. I would have been rear-ended.Right after all this.. my heart started beating like hell and I got all mad at the ladyfor putting me in that situation. I swear I would have really be ticked off if I got hit.
I just thank God for looking down on me this time... the cross around my neck saved me.

Thanks TXBill.. I will keep that advice of keeping extra room in the front. Never thought of that

To make a long story short, that's how my beloved 240-D, with less than an oil change from hitting 300,000 miles died. My then girlfriend and I were at a stop light with a minivan behind us. I heard an incredible crash behind us and looked up just in time to realize the minivan was about to hit us. Some man in a huge Dodge Ram didn't realize the light was red and slammed into the minivan at 50mph! Neadless to say my car was totalled and we both spent six months getting chiropractic care (justified, of course). I still keep a good eye in the rear view mirror.

PS The only good thing was that the insurance company paid me a good $800 more for the car than I could have sold it for. I had to sue for the doctors' bills and won. Came out ahead with a fair, not inflated, award.

, although I wonder if she's really that much of a bi$ch for losing control of her car. Could have had a screaming kid in there or something, you never know.

Hey I wish I had your luck. Around March of this year, I was out riding my beloved Suzuki Katana 600. I was on a four lane road, going around a curve, when the lady next to me in a Taurus cut me off. If I didn't grab the brakes hard, I for sure would of been hit. All of this was to no avail though as I popped up in the turn, locked the rear, and lost control. The bike slid out from under me and we [the bike and I] slid into oncoming traffic. I slid about 30' and the bike slid about 40' before being hit by a van. I still have the scars to prove it. I have now found myself putting money into my newly aquired 240D instead of searching out a new bike. Maybe next year I'll get back into the saddle. The 240D may run better, but it just doesn't appeal to the ladies in the same way my old Katana did. Oh well, enough about motorcycles, this is a Mercedes forum...

In NJ, "safe following distance" is about 2 feet, but I always leave room, both when driving and when at a stop, so I can "help" the guy behind me stop in time.

A good rule of thumb is always stop such that you can see the bottom of the rear tires of the car in front of you. This way, you can pull around if need be and pull up if necessary.

Snibble...sorry to hear about your expereince and I hope I dont encounter the same thing. About 6 months ago coming home from school I saw a transport truck hit a car.....I was following behind it at quite a distance and all of a sudden it hit its brakes and swirved and I saw a bumper and parts of plastic flying from the front of the truck. When I carefully drove by, sure enough he hit a car...driver was ok. Once though someone did hit me but not too hard...it was up in the country at railway crossing but luckily I was far away from the tracks! I was in the process of putting the car in park when all of a sudden it jumped quite a few feet forward......I thought great the tranny just went haywire or something

but then I looked in the rearview mirror and there was a cavalier buried in the back of me. I though ohh great..I step out and his whole front bumper was smashed and the lights were pushed in...the 126...the bumber was scratched a bit!!!

I got very mad at the driver and he had admitted that he was not paying attention to his driving.

Hmmm.. this makes me a little angry. I don't drive like a maniac, especially when the conditions are bad. Then you have others who drive faster than they could control on dangerous road conditions. If I were to hit, I am guessing the insurance company would blame me for my age and that I am a young male. Besides.. my goal is to have a perfect record, no tickets or accidents at all.
