MBZ380se is right few of the old S-classes will ever hit 150 excluding anything that AMG touched. I remeber when We got the 500 my dad got up to 140-145 with me and my mom in the car and that was all it had. (ahhh great times )

Sorry guys, I forgot about the early 80's! Bad years for any car in the USA. I just try to put that time out of mind.

I was very suprised to get 140+ out of the 108 4.5, you would think you were pushing a phone booth down the road, but somehow that body likes it.

Go for a ride in a 6.3, it may change your mind.

Topping out is fun but 165 on entrance ramps is where life begins.

can't compare to 165 but I hit 120 on the on ramp that night. I love peoples faces when your going faster on the on ramp than they are on the interstate.

Years ago I hit 155 in an old Camaro that my father and I had built a serious 350 engine/350 auto tranny for...VERY "floaty" and dangerous in a 79 Camaro--I don't recommend trying it, but man was it fun!

140 plus in a W108 body that didn't have a 6.3 liter in it?

What did you do to that car, supercharge it?

I thought only the 6.3 of any of the W108/109 cars would break 140. I seem to remember contemporary road tests having the 280SEL 4.5 top out at 125ish.

According to Car and Driver, a W116 US market 450SEL went 0-60 in 10.2 seconds and topped out at 127 mph. I think that car was a '77 or something.

Got speedo pics?

this has gotta be wrong, 'cause I pulled 135 in mine. I know it's a W107 and may be lighter 'cause it's a convertible, but that can't be too much of a difference. I don't have pics 'cause I was the only one driving, but I do have a little video of me goin 125 and bein cut off by a van. [D'OH!] luckily, I had good brakes. If you really want me to post it up, I will for a little while, but I can't see why it's not possible

Well, the biggest reason that I'd be thinking of is aerodynamic drag.

A 560SL will do in the 130s (again, check contemporary road tests for exact figures) fully maxed out, and that's with 240 hp and 280 pounds-feet, with the R107 body. The 560SEL in the W126 body is heavier, but has a higher top speed due to a cleaner shape.

Aerodynamics plays a big role at high speeds, and explains why my 160 hp and 181 lb-ft turbocharged car that weighs around 3000 pounds maxes at a piddling 119 mph. (C & D).

Hills and a nice tailwind make all the difference in the world. Top speed of cars have many more variables than a ¼ mile run or 0-60.

Temperature is the biggest factor I have noticed in top speed performance. With that said you guys are talking about a difference of 6-8 mph depending on how you look at the needle.

With all of the environmental variables aside, tires and road surface play a large part as well, the list goes on. I am sure blackmercedes and others could bring some very substantive comments on the physics.
