I'd love to see how fast my 300D can go...but I'm too scared of getting a ticket.

My truck hits the governor right at 75 mph. I need either an overdrive of 3.54 gears...

When I had my Suzuki Katana 600, I topped it out at 148, but decided it was best to slow down when I saw some deer in a field next to the road. Speed kills, but boy it is fun. Now if my 240D would only go that fast...

Volkl42:

I noticed your sig indicates you hail from Chicago/Bloomington IL...that's about a 3 1/2 hour drive between the two...are you going to school at either place?

Just curious...I hail from Springfield IL, and my first salaried job was at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington back in 84 (the Eclipse plant didn't even exist back then!).

G-Benz:

Yea, I'm from Chicago, but go to school here in Bloomington, Illinois Wesleyan University. The drive is only about 2 hours, when I do go home. Yea, this entire town is either employed by State Farm, Mitsubishi, or Illinois State University. I don't exactly like the Eclipse or the Galant, which are both made here, but it is cool to go over by the plant. You come over a hill and the landscape opens up to a giant lot filled w/ 20,000 brand new cars. Makes any car lover drool.

Any of you try going out to Death Valley? There a bunch of top end junkies that roam the planes out there - kinda "Mad Max" like. My cousin in law rode his 94 750VFR WFO for long stretches of time. I used to ride a sport bike and there are a bunch of top end sport bike guys that frequent the valley.

Fastest I've gone is 130 - on a 93 Honda VFR 750. Feel to old to do that speed stuff anymore but get a kick out of hearing others stories.

Still getting 12 mpg at that speed, too. Nice!

My car hits a similar top speed, but it's stopped by lack of aerodynamics, not redline. Probably gets way worse than 12 mpg at its top speed.

I am pushing 50 years old, top speed on any old V8 S Class is over 150 mph, just takes time to get there, on a flat road with safe conditions. I cut my teeth driving 500+ HP cars, at a very young age, on a NHRA track, going down the 1/4 mile at over 140 mph, in a 4000 lb chunk of American Iron with front disc brakes, if you were lucky! This time was in about 10.3 sec, check that out with your 4.5 to 60 mph dream machine time. My old 1968 Hemi Charger topped out over 150 MPH, and did it quickly, with a lot of G'ees pushing you back in the seat. Our newer machines can match the top speed of the old iron, but not in the 1/4 standing start mile!

Any questions?

I put my 450 up to 135 last year... ran outta gears! but it didn't have much power left either. I brought my parent's old 735 up to 135 also on 52, but it started getting bumpy [as anyone in san diego will know] and I had to slow down

That's kind of a bold statement.

The 380SE is an "old V8 S-class". It will do probably between 120-125 mph in said conditions.

Even a W126 560SEL will do maybe 145 mph, maxed out, drag limited.

I'm thinking the only V8 S-class that will hit those speeds is a newer 500SEL. Even a 6.9 will run only up to the mid 140s.
