Land Rover problems... HELP
 

ok!! heres my dilemma, Brand new starter, new battery, new alternator new Gas filter... the car used to work OK til the owner decided to install a CD player in it, it worked OK for a few weeks, now its not starting.. ok when it finally starts you can be on the road and it powers OFF while your driving.. Does anyone know what the problem could be?? or what the problem is... :rolleyes:

Voltage regulator module
 

Just a stab, I am no mech but feel that I am so inclined!
My guess is that he may have shorted something and mucked up the voltage regulator module or on an off chance the coil could be bad. Does it act up at all ie.. run rough or backfire etc.

The last 2 possibilities are massflow sensor and or O2 sensor. But from the sounds of it the issue seems electrical rather than sensor related.

Best option would be drag it in to the benz dealer and the G-folks will tell ya get a G the M folks will tell ya naaa get an M.
Perhaps you need some humor to cheer you up!

It doesn't act up, it just turns off... and it could take from one minute to a whole day to start again.. electrical problem?? probably yes.. then again I'm no Mech.. I guess I'll call Land Rover and see about setting up an appointment w/ them!!

I believe Land Rover uses Lucas wiring. Not a good thing.

Lucas is the company that is responsible for the wiring and electricals in most British cars over the millenia - Jaguar, MG, etc.

They have always had electrical problems.

Lucas electric is known as the Prince of Darkness, whose motto is "don't drive at night" :eek:

I invested well over 2k in the car already, my heart actually is not really in it, I'm thinking of selling it to a dealer for parts now.. or put a for sale sign on it and leave it in the parking lot... Thats why i drive the Benz and the lady drives the Rover..

Lucas wiring is synonymous with the sound of wires shorting out "bzzzzzzzzt".

Get rid of the Land Rover. Quickly.

I know that the British vehicle manufaturers USED to wire up their electrical systems to be POSITIVE ground. Do they still do that?

The negative ground CD player could wreak havoc in that scenario (if it even worked at all). If the CD chassis touches anything metal in the vehicle, then total meltdown would result until the chassis loses contact or is removed.

I would consider removing the CD player first.

I had a Jag a few years ago that had a faulty aftermarket alarm system. Somehow, the brain would cause the car to suck the battery dry when sitting...yanked out the alarm, and everything was fine.

Can't steal a car with a dead battery. Maybe the alarm really wasn't faulty:D

I have a rangie myself ;) Check the battery cables and make sure the ground is still solid. Moving stuff around in there you might have broken the ground connection or the terminal is loose or broken..

If it starts then dies do you loose power completely or does the engine just shut off ? . If it has an alarm it may be related to that but I doubt it. If the electrics stay on and the engine just dies there is a fuel pump cutoff inertia switch under the driver's seat, if it has popped up shutting of the fuel pump incase of roll over - push it back down , get home then worry about why it might be popping-up?
