Oh No!!

I am posting this here cause in tech help I dont get an answer fast enough.

Driving to school today and getting off the highway ramp to a stoplight the temperature gauge (while sitting at the light) went between 80 and 120. Then when moving off again it went down to normal. The car never did this before even in the boiling summer heat with AC on.

Where can I start to look? Is it the thermostat? I hope its not the head gasket or something!

it is usually locked on 80 and just a tad above but not this much. The only thing that was on was the radio and not even the heat.
