That was fun, but who in the heck came up with that list? Did I miss something about the Pontiac GTO that it needs to be on a "worst car" poll list? Even after I read their disclaimer, it don't make sense. Must have been made up by someone who "wasn't there" at the time the GTO's were pounding most everything else into the ground. May not have been the epitimy(sp?) of the best car on the road, but on a list for the worst??!! And the Chevy Caprice? C'mon!!!!!! I never owned either of these cars, but knew lot's of people who did.
(I'm sending a copy of this to Forbes)

They REALLY need to take that Pontiac GTO off the list. Which wiseguy came up with that anyway? The Caprice isn't bad, except that it suffered from body rot after the second year. This was when they used to stockpile parts. How about the Ford Pinto?

I don't know anything about Chevy's.. but I know that the Caprice were used for taxi's. Why would they use a car thats "unreliable" for a taxi? I would honeslty think Caprices are reliable and can handle a lot of road stress.

I agree. The Goat is an American icon, the one that defined the muscle car.

Either that or they really pronounce "GTO" as "Aztek" ... then I would definitely agree ...

Actually, many Caprices start out their lives as police cars. After they are driven to hell and back, they are used as taxi cabs! Talk about wear and tear!

Boy, the Chevy list is indeed truly warped.
Chevette, Citation, Caprice (without assigning a year yet besides!), and Corvair. The only bad thing about the Corvair was the book Knucklehead Nader wrote about it (well, actually he brought up some good points in "Unsafe at Any Speed", but slamming the 'Vair was one bad point).
The Citation was really kind of a hallmark in Chevy design history, affected lots of US manufacturers, and introduced LOTS of snowbelt drivers to the advantages of front wheel drive. Rusted out pretty bad, but this was 79-80 or so and everyone was still battling rust problems. It wasn't nearly as gutless if you got the 2.8 V6 HO. I thought the 2.5 4 cyl did OK as long as you got a manual trans.
Vega was ALOT worse than any of these, what a heap!
They made a Diesel version of the Chevette, so they weren't ALL bad. Actually a nice enough car for the money if well cared for. Unfortunately, most weren't.
Since the list does specify "1974 GTO" I can kinda see there reasoning, however there were alot of other likely candidates in this same era. Didn't Pontiac make the "Can Am" back about 74, the one that NASCAR outlawed due to unfair aerodynamic advantage (the one with the pointy sloped nose)?
Yeah, Aztec, where the hell is the Aztek?
I don't think the Maverick was all that lousy, seemed to hold up better than the Pinto, although I believe they are related.
Toward the end of production I think the Pinto was pretty well done. The Vega always sucked, except maybe the Cosworth Vega, they were cool.

Gilly

ps Oh wait, has everyone forgotten about the Aspen/Volare from Chrysler? Suck suck suck!

The list is incorrect. Easily the worst US made car of all time was the Chevy Vega.

You can click on the original post in this thread (to take the poll) and they actually do walk you through all of their points. I still think they goofed on several points, and there are alot worse candidates than are selected.
Yes, they do mean the 86 Eldorado, although if nothing else is a fairly handsome US car.
They do claim that not all GTO's are "bad" cars, just picking on the 74.
It's worth it to go over their reasoning.
They still missed the Aztek though

Not enought Dodges/chryslers on thelist.

How you can compare worst American cars ever without including any of the mid to late '80s chrysler products (K cars) is beyond me. They did have the TC by Miserablerati, though. I guess that was the king of them all.

That entire generation of Chrysler products was junk. How many of them do you see on the road these days, even in the weather-forgiving south? A more honest approach would have been to market them through Bic as disposable cars. Who knows, if the price were right, I'd have probably bought a six pack!

And yes, the '72 Vega with the aluminum meltdown engine should have been at the top of the list

Maybe they should have included those infamous AMF Harley Davidson's that they used to have to put a drip pan under in the show room because they would leak oil right from the factory
