It's gonna be, like forever, before we get DSL out in my neighborhood. I do alot of my surfing (like right now) at work where I have DSL. On a good day I can get a connection over 40k at home, but usually around 33k, and it hangs alot. Is cable internet all it's cracked up to be? Haven't heard much about it since all the big advertisment campaigns a couple years ago.

I have it at home as well - AT&T broadband. I routinely see file downloads at speeds in the range of 800K-1000K bits/second. Mercedesshop web pages load almost as fast as you can click.

I have Comcast. It sucks. I used a program called Netstat live (to gauge internet connection) and I consistently get 30k (& less) connections, I have spent three hours (documented) on the phone with their tech support. I don't know why I don't cancel!

COMCAST SUCKS!

Here's the skinny on cable vs. DSL:

Cable is faster than DSL!!!

DSL is more reliable than cable (how often does your phone system go down versus your cable system?)

Cable speed is very dependent on traffic...if everyone in your neighborhood is on cable, then speed degrades exponentially!

DSL is slower, but there are no bandwidth problems due to traffic. So you get the same speed no matter who else is on.

You weigh the pros and cons and choose what works for you...

That's exactly what a fellow I work with told me too.
Thanks for all the responses I think I may go for it. I'm hoping that even at it's worst, cable internet will still be better than what I have now. And I'm hoping it won't ever be as bad as Comcast! (We have ATT Broadband out here)

DSL = Dedicated bandwidth and guaranteed usually 80 % or more at all times.

Cable = Shared Bandwidth - if there are many users it will slow down, but usually not enough to notice.

Cable modem access in my neighborhood has been a disaster. Three homes have it and have had over 20 service calls APIECE over the last six months. They are very unhappy.

Everything from doesn't work, to hangups, to very, very slow speeds. Appears to have variable causes.

They record all the outages, all the slowdowns and make the provider credit them. Consider starting a log book early.

Ditto on Cable being the best. We have Time Warner here. Have never detected slow connects that weren't due to conditions on the site on the other end. Pictures load almost instantly.

have had it for more than two years. all my brothers and sisters have it in their households with routers. once you've tried it you can never go back. i used to have ISDN - that was slow compared to cable. what has actually slowed down are the websites. i go on my not-so-busy website and it's lightning fast! go on my.yahoo.com and it always takes a few ticks...

I heard that there can be some security issues with cable
modems as you are on a network segment with other people.
I put in a Linksys router that acts as a 4 port splitter and a
firewall. With it, no one can detect my PC's and many of the
standard hacks are blocked. It was easy to set up.

I have Time Warner Road Runner. Had a problem back in January. They sent two tech's to the house. The line from the house to the box had to be replaced. They replaced the line the next day and credited my account.
